Transit Advertising Used To Advertise Programs And Services

Transit advertising has become more popular amongst businesses and nonprofit organizations. Read through this article to learn about a few agencies that are making a difference with this important medium.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs provide valuable nutrition education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support and information to pregnant women, mothers and their children.

WIC programs are administered by county and city health departments, CAAs and/or other nonprofit organizations. Although WIC programs are free to eligible women and children, most people are not aware of the existence of WIC programs in their communities.

To address the lack of awareness, several CAA-administered WIC program offices have taken steps to inform their communities about their services. While most CAAs focus on traditional advertising methods, some CAAs use the bolder method of public transit advertising to inform residents about their valuable services.

Transit advertising is available nationwide through Blue Line Media, which periodically offers CAAs government and nonprofit discounted advertising rates as part of its pro bono efforts.

South Plains Community Action Association (SPCAA) recently promoted its WIC program on the outside and inside of public transit buses in Lubbock, Texas. SPCAA’s bus ads promote their nutrition education and breastfeeding support programs, among others, and include an 800 phone number and a website address. “Bus advertising helps promote our WIC programs and services to our citizens, who may not otherwise know about their WIC benefits, says Sandra Hill, SPCAA WIC Program Director.

Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) also recently advertised its WIC program on Ames, Iowa buses, with a focus on the importance of breastfeeding. MICA’s bus ad touts the benefits of breastfeeding and encourages mothers not to give up on breastfeeding without first seeking MICA’s assistance. “Bus advertising helps us increase awareness about the availability of our WIC programs and services,” says MICA Health Services Compliance Manager Kate Pergande.

Other organizations will continue to use this medium to promote their products and services because it works. The big, bold ads are displayed for everyone to see as they travel through streets and freeways. They garner so much attention that they can’t be missed.

More and more companies will incorporate transit ads into their marketing mix in order to generate attention about their brand and increase revenue. Transit advertising as a medium has proven its effectiveness for the past 50 years. And it will continue to do so as long as buses are around on the street for everyone to see.

Transit advertising has been effective for many advertisers, including Fortune 500 companies and government organizations. Just recently, the Dept of Veterans Affairs advertised in 11 cities using transit shelter advertising, bus advertising, subway advertising and more. The ads are to reach veterans and their families regarding the Suicide Prevention Hotline. This is the second time the VA has advertised using transit ads. The first was in 2009 when the VA advertised in over 124 cities using transit displays.
