Wart and Mole Removers-First Steps in Mole and Wart Removal

Wart and mole removers have been in demand since time immemorial. These common skin conditions have provoked an endless search for “magic cures” which would give us beautiful and healthy looking skin.

Moles and warts are rarely of any danger to our health, so the issues they raise are largely cosmetic. However, this is not to say that occasionally something more serious isn’t afoot. If you feel concerned about any change in your skin, you should see your doctor as soon as possible, if only for your own peace of mind.

So, what are moles, and what are warts?

Moles are no more than small, local darkened areas of skin. The darkening is caused by our own natural skin pigment.

Moles come in two types: those we are born with, and those which come later in life.

I was born with a small mole under my right eye. It has never caused me any problems, nor do I expect it to. Moles we are born with tend to stay much the same in color, size and shape throughout our lives.

Moles which come on later in our lives may indicate a problem which needs attention. So, a mole which suddenly appears, or which is changing color or is growing, or which bleeds, may be a sign that a real problem is developing.

Pale skinned folks living or working in intense sunlight should mind their skin, and pay close attention to any changes in pigmentation.

In short, moles are rarely anything to worry about, unless they appear later in life. In that case, a mole may be a sign that something more serious is developing.

Warts, on the other hand, are not a natural part of the skin, but are, in technical terms, benign tumors caused by the HPV or human papillomavirus. They are incredibly common, as the HPV virus cannot be avoided- it is found throughout the environment.

Warts may appear anywhere on the body, including the soles of the feet. Generally they respond well to treatment.

That said, warts or any wart-like formations on the genitals are cause for concern. First, the untrained eye may confuse a more serious sexually transmitted disease with simple warts, with real consequences for the sufferer. Second, genital warts are spread very rapidly through sexual contact, so they merit rapid and effective treatment.

Warts and moles are both known to respond well to laser treatment and cryotherapy. Laser therapy uses intense localized heat to kill the offending blemish, while cryotherapy uses intense cold to achieve the same result.

In addition, moles and warts can be treated with any number of natural medications. Not all of these work all that well, as many are based on unproven principles. However, some do have a degree of proven efficacy; I have written elsewhere on natural and home remedies for moles and warts.

While late appearing moles should be treated, or at least examined by your doctor, warts can be left alone in many cases. Children are very prone to warts as they are in regular skin-to-skin contact with their playmates. Warts in children frequently fade away without any medical or even parental intervention.

If you have a persistent case of warts in a child, talk to your local druggist about salicylic acid. This is a very old remedy which uses a weak acid solution to burn off the wart with repeated applications over a period of weeks.

As a last resort, warts and moles can be cut away surgically. While this holds our the promise of finality, there is a catch. Because mole and wart removal is almost always a cosmetic, elective surgery, your insurer may not cover you. Check with your insurer before going down the surgical road for mole or wart removal.
