What Massage Courses Won’t Teach You

There are many people all over the world that will do a massage course. Massage courses will give you the skills needed to become a massage therapist and many of them will be certified. Of course no matter how good the course you are doing there will be things that are not covered.

Before you can get into what the massage courses do not teach you knowing what they do teach is important. There are different levels of massage courses that you can do depending on how long and what you want to study. The basic courses will usually be certificate courses and take at most a year to complete. There are also diploma courses that will take up to 2 years to complete. The diploma course will normally cover at least double what the certificate course will do.

Certificate courses will normally have an introduction module and two modules on the foundation of massage. Almost all of these courses will also have a module in human anatomy as well as the safe practises of massage. There will also be a module in massage practice where you will be given hands on experience doing massage. Some of the courses will have other modules in addition to these but others will simply have different modules.

Diploma courses will have all the modules a certificate has but will also have more going to advanced levels. Additionally there are other modules that deal with certain types of massage. These modules will teach you about deep tissue massage, sports massage and clinical aromatherapy. There are some courses that will also include a healthcare business module that will teach you what you need to know about the healthcare system. Once all the modules have been completed a certificate or diploma will be awarded. These will allow you to get a better job inside the field.

Although there is a lot that gets covered by the courses there are some things that are not taught to you. One of these things is client handling. Any interaction you have with your clients other than the actual massage treatment will be placed under client handling. These face to face interactions with people are never actually covered in a massage course even though they are a large part of massage therapy.

Customer service is one of the most important aspects of client handling. You need to remember that massage therapy is part of the service industry and your clients will expect to have excellent service.

Additionally the competitive nature of massage therapy means that you have to go that extra mile to ensure your clients come back. Client comfort also needs to be addressed as you want your clients to be relaxed when they visit you. There are many things that you can do to create client comfort. Many of these things will be clinical in nature and will ensure that your client is positioned correctly and comfortably in order to get the best from the massage.

There are a lot of things that massage courses do not teach you. One of the most important things is client handling which is very important in a service industry business like massage. Of course some things you will have to simply find out on your own.
