3 Expert Tips to Improve the Power of Your Punches
If you’re looking for a magical solution that will allow you to punch harder, you are on the wrong page. You should consult a magician, and ask him for a magic potion. We all know how frustrating it is when a new guy comes to the gym and shows an amazing knockout power even though he has no prior training, but there’s not much we can do about it.
There are a couple of basic things to do, nevertheless, to increase the power of your punches, and that people tend to ignore. They probably do it because it is boring but, unfortunately, there’s no real shortcut to success.
1.Get the mechanics right. That’s the first thing to do if you want to get knockout power. Before learning how to throw devastating punches, learn how to throw a proper punch. Swinging for the fences might look good when Wanderlei Silva does it, but unless you have the whole Chute Boxe old school arsenal, it might just not be enough. When you throw a punch, you have to be very careful to involve your whole body. You won’t be able to inflict too much damage otherwise, and an arm punch is usually a weak punch.
Everything should get involved, from your legs to your hips, torso, shoulder and elbow. And there are so many details involved it will take you a while to get them right. But when you do, everyone will fear your hands, and it will be worth it.
2. Get strong and well-rounded. Power is a key attribute in fighting sports, and it also translates to the power of your punches. Unfortunately, if you train like a bodybuilder, you won’t be able to hit like a boxer. You need a training program designed for fighting sports, rather than a general strength and conditioning routine. You need to have a strong core first, especially if you fight MMA, and then work on your overall strength. Punching is an explosive movement, and you will need to work out accordingly, in order to develop explosive power. Use compound exercises rather than isolation exercises, and get strong everywhere. You might not like to train one muscle group or another, but you still have to do it in order to reach your goals.
3. The Heavy Bag is your best friend. If you don’t practice over and over again, your punching power will not improve. The heavy bag will help you a lot and by hitting it, you will learn how to appreciate the distance and how to correct your posture and technique in order to throw good punches. If something’s missing from your posture, the heavy bag will let you know. You can feel and hear when you hit it right, as well as when you hit it wrong.
If you train MMA, standing up and hitting the bag won’t be enough. You also have to practice some ground positions, as hitting an opponent from your knees is a whole different thing. The mechanics are different and on the ground you might not be as strong as you thought. You can put the heavy bag on the floor and hit it, while constantly trying to switch positions. Keeping your balance on the ground is difficult and without the proper drills and exercises, you won’t be able to deliver those powerful punches and you will get swept or submitted.
