Choosing the Best Personal Alarm

A good alarm will actually protect you from harm, from potential rapists, muggers and attackers.

Violent and serious crimes are on the rise and most of time, women and girls are easy targets. So if you live around a violent neighborhood or have to go through dark and lonely parking lots, you do need protection. Oh, and it is not necessary that crimes occur only n ‘bad’ places, in dark alleys – they can happen on bright sunny days in genteel residential areas as well.

You may be a strong independent woman, able to hold your own in the big bad world, but you still need to have some protection. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry. It is not only women who need protection. Men can also use these gadgets against muggers and personal attackers. So what are the personal protection devices in the market?

Sound and light gadgets

These are among the most popular personal alarm devices. Personal alarm devices can be as small a key ring or bigger. In fact it is a good idea to always have a key ring alarm and put one on all your keys (if you carry separate key chains). Even if you carry bigger devices, the key ring alarm can be a back-up.

Personal sound alarms emit a high decibel sound (recommended 130 or higher decibels) which can throw off the attacker and perhaps attract passersby or alert neighbors. It is a shrieking loud sound and may be continuous or intermittent. Many of these small alarms are easy to carry and some of them also come with a light attachment, which will illuminate the attacker’s face. Some of them even mark the criminal with a foul odor and/or ultraviolet tracers. Of course, you must make sure that they are fully juiced and change the batteries when required.

Sprays

Spray cans like Mace can be very effective. However, you do need to be able to get at them, so you should have the time to open your bag, retrieve the can and spray. However, you can also get them in key rings which are smaller and handier than a larger spray can. They can usually spray up to five times with pepper, incapacitating the attacker and blinding him, particularly if you can spray in the direction of the eyes.

Apart from key chains, you can also get these in the shape of lipsticks and some of them also spray dye on the attacker, thus marking him. Pepper sprays are often regulated by state laws.

Stun guns

Stun guns may not look like guns at all as they come in myriad shapes and sizes. They come in the shape of batons, torches, cell phones and even lipsticks. Stun guns shoot high voltage currents from 300,000 volts onwards on contact – the longer the gun is in contact with the perpetrator, the stronger its effects. However, stun guns may be illegal in some states, so check before buying.

While tasers can be used from up to 15 feet away, they are illegal for use in most states and are used by law enforcement agents.

It is always a good idea to carry at least a key chain alarm or spray with you at all times and have another (a bigger device) as back-up in your bag.
