The snowy days of winter, what does it mean for you? To most folks winter means a time of slippery sidewalks, nasty roads, flu season, and something that can be much worse for others, the Winter Blues. The winter blues does not generally happen to someone who is busy all day with things to do in the winter, because they keep active and energetic, as night time approaches, they relax and go to sleep. Now, since you have enough extra time on your hands in the winter, that it causes you to get the winter blues, lets discover a great little hobby that can help beat it, and that hobby is stamp collecting.

Stamp collecting has probably been around since there has been postage stamps. Now, since you are new or a beginner to stamp collecting, and this is going to be done as a hobby to help beat the winter blues, I will be talking about the basics and how to enjoy stamp collecting for very little money. The first thing to do, is to think about what types of stamps you want to start collecting. Some of the nicest collections are based on themes or different subjects, for instance if you enjoy fishing, why not collect stamps that feature fish and fishing scenes on them. If you enjoy sports, you may wish to collect stamps that have images of sports on them.

There are no limits really when it comes to stamps, there are stamps that feature almost any subject imaginable, even nudity. Stamps are issued in numerous countries around the world, so once you get started you have the whole world at your hobbies interest, with the internet. You should buy a nice album to keep your stamps in, and make sure you buy some stamp holders for them, the most common ones use a plastic cover and backing that allows your stamps to be secured onto the album pages, without damaging the stamps.

You can find stamps all over the place for little or no money, some of the free sources are the mail and packages you receive at home or at work. The cheaper places to often find whole bags of stamps are rummage and yard sales, and on internet sites such as eBay. You can also purchase more expensive stamps online from other collectors, or at trade shows, and you may also wish to join an online stamp company that sells stamps on a monthly approval basis. Another great source for buying whole sets of stamps that cover a theme is the Post Office, for instance you can purchase sets of stamps covering Christmas, Flowers, Birds, and tons of other themes there. You may wish to purchase a couple books on world stamps, ones that have pictures so you can see all of the different stamps available, and the rarity and costs of them. Collecting stamps is a fun and rewarding hobby that can be enjoyed by one person, or the whole family, it\’s not just fun, it\’s also a great way to help beat the winter blues.
