Signs of Teen Depression
Making the determination that a teen is in need of counseling is seldom easy. As a parent, it can sometimes feel like an admission of failure, that a poor job was done in raising the child. It can also feel frightening, especially for those who have never seen a counselor before. Despite those concerns, however, it might also be vital if a teen has gotten beyond the point where he/she is able to deal with things. For those concerned their teen might be at this point, here are some guidelines that should help in determining whether counseling is necessary.
A teen has become isolated. Everybody needs some time alone, but if a teen has significantly increased the amount of time spent alone, it could be cause for concern. Depressed people don\’t generally like talking to or being around other people. It is important to be able to have somebody to talk with, and if a teen has decided to shut him or herself off from friends and family, it may be time to seek out counseling.
The teen lashes out frequently. All teens rebel to some degree or another. It is part of growing up. It becomes a matter of concern when that rebellion begins to cause damage to the rest of the family. If the law has gotten involved, or if other family members have become burned out due to the frequent tirades of an angry teen, something needs to be done.
There is a possibility that drugs are involved. This is a definite situation where counseling needs to be sought out immediately. If a teen is showing signs of drug use, such as sudden change in work or school performance, bloodshot or dilated eyes, possession of drug paraphernalia, or going missing for extended periods, counseling is a must. If the teen is unwilling to enter counseling even though drug use is occurring, that teen needs to be forced. Addiction is such a powerful enemy that it will attempt to refuse all possible help.
The teen undergoes disturbing physical changes. If a teen loses or gains a great deal weight in a short amount of time, it is possible that the teen is suffering from depression or anxiety. If a teen completely alters his/her appearance, adding things like body piercings or other adornments that the teen has never been known to like or approve of, it should raise a red flag. Any noticeable, unexplained alteration of physical appearance, whether weight changes, body modification, or other, is a potential cause for concern and should be monitored closely.
There is unprecedented promiscuity. If a teen (who has already gone through puberty) that is normally reserved in relationships suddenly begins engaging in promiscuous behavior, counseling should be considered. At the very least, counseling concerning safe sex practices should be initiated. Many times promiscuity in teens is a sign of a deeper problem, such as depression.
Counseling is always more effective the sooner it is begun, so if one or more of these problems is noticed, don\’t wait.
