Taking Care Of Your Carpet
Carpets are popular floor surfaces. They’re warm, beautiful, and nice to the touch — it’s not unusual to find houses in colder climates carpeted from wall to wall. But like all floor materials, carpets get dirty after getting walked on. So it’s important to have a periodical carpet cleaning regimen in place so your carpets last a lifetime. This should include using the right carpet cleaning solution and carpet deodorizer.
Like with all other floor surfaces, the best way to keep your carpet clean is to avoid getting it too dirty in the first place. If an entire room is carpeted, it’s often a good idea to have rugs at the entrances of your home. You may also want to keep pets off the carpeted areas, and get the kids to eat and drink elsewhere.
But even if you have left your carpets mostly undisturbed, they’ll still gather quite a bit of dust after a while. And with dust comes allergens and parasites, which can wreak havoc on your health if left unchecked. You also can’t help but spill food and water on it at least a few times during the carpet’s lifetime.
Carpet Stains — How To Deal With Them
Many of us try to rub spills off the carpet with a cloth or sponge. Some of us even use hair dryers to dry the spill out. Not really a good idea — doing so will make the stain stick, and it’ll make the spill area look ugly and old, and even harm the carpet fibers.
The right way of dealing with a liquid carpet stain is to use a towel or sponge to blot up (not rub) any liquid you can get. Then take these measures for the different kinds of stains. Take your pick and choose the best carpet cleaning solution for your situation:
Grease/Ink: Dab the stain with some dry-cleaning liquid (available in the laundry section at Walmart or large variety stores) , then blot with a warm water and dishwashing liquid mixture. Start around the edges of the stain and work your way inward, then let the solution stand for five minutes.
Juice/Wine: Use a mix of detergent and lukewarm water. (Ammonia also works, if the smell isn’t too offensive to you.) Then use a sponge to apply some club soda to the stain, then apply more lukewarm detergent water.
Cover the stain with paper towels and let them stand overnight. In the morning, take off the paper towels and brush the stain away. You can also vacuum any parts of the stain that may have dried up and solidified.
Carpet Care for Wall-to-wall Carpeting
It’s a good idea to clean wall-to-wall carpeting once or twice a year. To begin, remove the furniture, and vacuum the whole carpeted area. You may find stains after vacuuming, after which you can use the cleaning tips mentioned above.
After treating any stains, use a home carpet cleaner to deeply and thoroughly clean the entire carpeted area at once. (Make sure you follow the provided instructions very closely!)
Always use clean water — when the water gets dirty, dispose of it and come back with a bucket of clean water. After the entire carpeted area has dried completely, you can then replace your furniture.
