The Most Expensive Wedding Gifts of All Time

It must be tough to be a celebrity. How do you propose marriage to your lady love when the whole world is watching? What do you say? And buying the ring must be so stressful. It has to be the best ring anyone has ever seen and the most expensive too. But you\’ve still got to leave plenty of money left over for the wedding and the real prize: her wedding gift. What do you give someone who already has enough money to buy whole empires on her own? Here are some of the most expensive wedding gifts of all time.

1. Art
Art is a good thing to get for a celebrity. It is completely original and it gets better with age. Priceless works of art have been bought and commissioned for the rich and famous as wedding gifts throughout history. King Tut\’s wife, Ankhesenamon, gifted him with the Little Golden Shrine, a series of panels depicting the royal couple in domestic scenes. It is one of the relics that was found in his tomb with him.

2. Money
Even among the elite, money is the gift that never goes out of style. Traditionally, when families or countries were joined by marriage, money would be part of the dowry exchanged in the arrangement. Marion Hay\’s dowry to George Brown of Coluston included money and a magical, preserved pear. This pear was said to have necromantic powers and the ability to keep the family that was in possession of the pear in great wealth. It was passed down through the family line as an heirloom. The Coluston family did have great wealth until one of the matriarchs could no longer resist the tempting fruit and took a bite. Financial doom followed. Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas asked to receive no gifts for their wedding, but asked that money be given to be put in a charitable trust for their son.

3. Jewels
Between couples themselves, there is nothing more popular as a gift than jewels. Engagement rings are a time-honored gift. Princess Diana\’s ring was worth $65,000 and she was also given a jewel-encrusted boat. Tom Cruise bought Katie Holmes a Fred Leighton oval-shaped diamond engagement ring worth $275,000. He also gave her a jet. Before he tired of them, Henry VIII liked to lavish his wives with jewels. Evelyn Walsh McLean, who would later go on to own the Hope Diamond, was given a necklace nearly as impressive as that on her wedding day. Her husband, Edward Beale McLean, gave her the \”Star of the East\” diamond necklace, which was valued at $120,000 in 1909. It was 92.5 carats of diamond supported by a 34.5 carat emerald.

4. Real Estate
The most popular and outlandish wedding gift is real estate. Who wouldn\’t want a house as a wedding present? How about a city? In one of the most outlandish wedding gifts of all time, the North African town of Tangier was given to Charles II of England as part of Catherine of Braganza\’s dowry in 1661.
