Ways to Save Money When Moving

If you are planning on moving in the near future it is important to consider how much money you will be spending, and how you can potentially save money instead of spending a ton. In order to save money during a move there are a handful of different things that you can do.

The first thing you need to do is to organize your belongings while packing. It’s a fact that most people hold on to so many different things that they actually don’t need or don’t even use. So, keep a large trash can nearby because it is a necessity to get rid of these things. After all, the less you have the smaller the moving truck will need to be. This in itself will save money.

First, once you have a new place that you will be moving into you need to consider the floor plan. You should obtain a floor plan of your future residence or try to draw one out yourself after measuring the square footage of each room. If all of your furniture won’t fit in your living room, bedroom or dining room – get rid of it. No, you don’t have to trash it, you can sell it on Craigslist or Ebay, which will actually give you money instead of taking it.

Another thing you should consider is the color of your new place or what color you will be painting the walls. If your furniture doesn’t match, you can sell it. Obviously if you are strapped for cash getting rid of your furniture for this reason might be a little extreme but if you can afford to get new furniture, this option is ideal.

Most people truly have the “I might need it someday” syndrome. It is completely natural to want to keep things that you have history with, but consider how often you actually use that particular item. If you don’t use it more than once a year, you probably won’t miss it. If you are moving into an apartment, I highly doubt you need to hold onto your lawn mower. Again, you can sell these items and make some extra dough. This being said, while packing it is best to eliminate rather than relocate. Believe it or not, eliminating things that you don’t use anymore will save money – in a big way.

Once you actually decide what you want to part with or should part with you can advertise it in the classifieds, on Craigslist, donate it or even hold a garage sale. Sure, you might not make a lot of money on the goods you’re getting rid of – but you won’t be spending as much on the rental truck.

Other things you can do to save money is to coordinate your move to avoid delays or storage issues, discontinue any electric gas or water services (which will save money when you get the bill) and don’t wait until the last minute, notify other companies that you use so that you can discontinue service. If you are traveling long distance for your move, call hotels toll-free along the way to make reservations ahead of time. This will save you a great deal of money as well.

All in all, consolidating is one of the main things that will save you money, along with great packing.
