Men begin to love trucks starting their toddler years. Since their creation, it is considered to be one of the ultimate toys for boys and grown men alike. With so many compartments, wheels and storage, its functionality cannot be denied. It can carry or haul almost anything. Large shipments can easily fit in them. The unveiling began in 1912. Around that time, General Motors was able to acquire another two independent manufacturers. This gave the company enough resources and man power to create the supreme machine that we’ve come to know and love as the truck. Endurance or stamina under extreme conditions was the focus of the original designs. This played an even more important role as GM vehicles were selected by the United States government to be used in World War I. The company is very proud to have served the US Army at that critical moment in time. In fact, the earliest trucks were solely built for that purpose when they were sold to the government. A reliable estimate states that between the years 1917 and 1919 more than 90% of all GM manufactured trucks were used by American soldiers serving the country.
Civilians did not know how to react to these vehicles at first. It was understandable how they could not find a place for trucks in their homes or businesses when they were so commonly utilized during the war. GM started to launch a magnitude of publicity campaigns and stunts in order to boost the popularity of the vehicle. One very efficient one involved a cross country trip in a truck, which was quite popular to the masses. Over the years, the design continued to improve as its original appearance altered and was remodeled and reworked over time. The truck’s increased power and capacity brought about increased functionality.
GM’s service to the government did not end during the First World War. When the Second World War took place, the work with the military continued. Additional trucks were needed for various purposes during the war. A sharp increase in the production was needed immediately and the company had to answer to the nationalistic call. Due to this, General Motors won the prestigious “E Award” of excellence for their contribution to the war effort. Much needed public attention was finally given to the firm in the form of public recognition and admiration. All these helped profits and reputation at the same time.
The 50’s and 60’s belonged to GM. It was this time when trucks had gotten rid of the image that it can only be used by the military for the war. Around these decades, the truck started to reap the benefits of being popular to the masses. There were now 75 models that were released. Both the industry and target market enjoyed the various types. More desirable features and luxuries were added to the designs which have become more massive. GM prided itself in being the third largest truck manufacturer all over the globe.
However, GM was not safe from industry pressures and problems. Increasing cost in materials, labor and production hit the company hard in these recent years. There is also strong competition from international brands. The reply of the company to these challenges is to use smart branding, focus on marketing techniques, and innovate. Through these strategies, GM will soon be able to reclaim its rightful place as one of the top truck manufacturers.
