Having a unique dress is probably one of the most important concerns of many girls who plan to attend a prom. The problem is that looking for short prom dresses that will not look like what everyone else is wearing may be more challenging than you think. If you have basic sewing skills and a small budget, you might be able to make a unique and fashionable short prom dress. Below are several steps to guide you:
Ready everything that you will need
The materials and tools you will need for making a short dress for prom include a measuring tape, scissors, a sewing machine, 3 elegant 36- or 48-inch scarves, thread, double-sided tape, and elastic the same size as your waist plus an allowance of 2 inches.
Measure your size
Before you start working with your materials, you will need to take your measurements so you will know the sizes of the fabric you will be using. Determine the measurement of your natural waist with a measuring tape. The distance of the middle of your bust and armpit should be measured next. In order to get the measurement of the dress\’ length, your height must be multiplied in inches by 1.5.
Make the top by folding the first scarf
Fold one of the scarves from corner to corner to make the dress\’ top part. Drape it over your bosom to make the point extend above your abdomen. Bring the scarf\’s ends behind your back and then tie the two ends together. Attach the double-sided tape to the inner part of the scarf fold and the part over your bust to keep the fabric from falling off your body.
Start creating the dress\’ skirt
The skirt is crafted in two phases. Leaving a remaining 18 inches, seam one side of one scarf after folding it in half. In the hip area, leave 2 inches allowance for ease of movement. Turn the top over so you can do a 2-inch casing on it and then stitch 4 inches of the edge. In order to adjust the length of the skirt, you must turn over the casing edge about two times. Once the elastic is inserted, sew its ends together. Finish sewing the casing.
Work on the second scarf
After cutting the diagonal of the second scarf, using a rolled handkerchief hem, hem one of the resulting pieces. Using a 3-inch finished hem, hem the raw end of the second side. Sew the upper edges together to attach them. Make sure that the shorter part is laid over the longer one when you do this. Go into the dress\’ elastic waist. Position the knot of the tied triangular second piece over the open seam on the right side.
To make a more unique dress, get creative with this project and add your own personal touches.
