There are some rather interesting innovations in cement these days which seems to be becoming more popular of late. Indeed, it used to be that people could do this kind of thing themselves if they were able to get the block patterns. These days though, the experts have many different designs to choose from and since they know how to do it properly, it may be a good idea to leave it to them.

Designs include a faux brick look, cobblestones or even sea shells to brighten up even the most mundane of areas. For example, around the pool, some wonderful sea shell designs may look perfect. One may wonder why putting down one slab and then putting on the design is better than installing individual bricks. If the temperatures go too high or too low, the material in between the bricks expand and contract very fast causing the bricks to shift around. Even the settling of the floor beneath will cause some kind of displacement so it may be a good idea to try one full slab instead.

If color is to be used, and this can be surface applied or mixed in with the cement, keep some back for emergency repairs which may be needed some time in the future. Failing this, try to repair with a dash of flair so the new mend will not stand out against the older cement.

There are some things to consider though when getting color cement to lay down large areas. This may require more than one load of cement and it is inevitable that there will be a very slight color change between the loads. Try then to do small sections which do not lay exactly adjacent to one another with different loads. Or get the professionals to skim in the colors in a fancy design so that it is not as noticeable.

Also, since this mixing is not an exact science, the finished color may not be quite what the buyer was expecting. It may be a good idea to be a little flexible here since no one can match this kind of material exactly to what is expected. As long as it is an approximation of the color, just go with the flow or get it skimmed over again with a different color.
