Shed Garage Plans

Sometimes one garage is just not enough. You start out with the perfect house, and perfect sized garage, and then acquire things. It may be a riding lawn mower, because ma and pa just can’t get around like they used to, or that brand new motorcycle you’ve been saving up for. It could even be the plethora of mobile kids toys, such as bikes, scooters, and those awesome little battery powered 4-wheelers we all lusted after as children (and may even continue to envy the kids for). Whatever it is, you need more space, but you don’t want to invest in an addition to your current garage even though you don’t have a lot of space.

You may want to consider a shed garage, also called a garage shed. Shed garage plans are easy to come by, and fairly simple to build. However, before building or purchasing a shed garage, you will want to check with your local building department to make sure you’re allowed to.

For those looking to purchase a shed garage ready-made or for assembly, you may have to look no further than your local department store. Stores such as Sear and Costco carry them, but they can cost a pretty penny-$1,500 and up! A chaper alternative is to design or purchase shed garage plans. These will cost much less, anywhere from $4.00-$500.00 depending on how fancy you want to get, and can be found easily by searching the internet.

When searching for the perfect plans, keep in mind the amount o space you have, and what kind of materials are easy to come by in your area. For instance, if I live in an area with extreme heat conditions, I may want to reconsider that sheet metal model. Especially if I plan to store heat sensitive items inside. Simple models tend to be about 12X24 feet, with a 10-11 foot height, depending on the door type. The general rule of thumb is you should go no smaller than this. A depth of 24 geet and a width of 12 is the lowest recommended size if you are considering storing a car inside. For trucks, SUVs and other vehicles, you will want to take in consideration the size of your vehicle before settling on a final plan.

Generally, these smaller structures like shed garages can be built from readily available materials and the plans can be purchased for much less than the pre-made models if you are unable to develop plans of your own. However, there are many things to keep in mind when purchasing a shed garage plan, such as local laws and policies, the cost of materials, and the time you will spend building. Many building departments will tell you what you can and cannot build in your area, and it is better to ask for direction and permission before you begin, than spend all of that time re-planning your shed garage, or tearing down what you have already started to build, or worse yet, finished.
