Shop Garage Plans

We all know a man or woman who lives more of their daily life in the comfort of their garage, building anything from cabinets to Mustangs, than they do inside their safe, climate-controlled house. They are the friend or family member who changes our oil for us while telling us we really could do it ourselves, mocks our foreign made cars, and occasionally crafts our beautiful new kitchen cupboards for us. For those who own tools that the rest of us can only look at and wonder what kind of torture device they descended from, shop garage plans may be the ideal way to go when planning to build a new garage.

When looking for shop garage plans, it’s best to have a list of solid ideas ready before you begin. For instance, what exactly do you want included in your shop garage? Do you need a higher roof so vehicles can be lifted? Do you plan to have one car in the garage at a time, or will you need additional bays? Do you need carpenter’s benches and room for table saws and other large tools and machines? Do you plan to have projects going while you have vehicles stored inside? These kinds of questions will help you decide on the minimum dimensions you will need. When in doubt, start measuring things. Remember, vehicle width needs to be measured with the doors open, or you may be in for a nasty surprise later.

Shop garage plans also need to take into consideration human comforts. After all, you’re going to be spending an awful lot of time in there building or tinkering. Do you need a heating and cooling system for sensitive things that will be stored in your garage? Maybe you live in a cold climate and you need a wood stove to keep yourself warm, or a hot climate and need fans and an AC unit to survive? Do you plan to install a bathroom, or washtub, and while you’re at it maybe a refrigerator so you never have to leave again? These are all things you will want to consider while searching for your dream shop garage plans.

At this point, you will want to, at the very least, consult an electrician and plumber depending on what you plan to have installed. Not that you can’t do it on your own, but a professional will know what the building inspector will or will not find acceptable, possibly saving you a lot of cash in the future.

After deciding on dimensions and amenities, you will want to consult your local building control department to find out just what you are and are not allowed to do with your shop garage plans. Before spending any money, you want to make sure that you can legally build on your property, and what must be included or is absolutely not allowed. There’s no point in building something if building control is going to show up and make you tear it down.
