Actor Auditions

Acting is a very lucrative profession but also one of the most demanding. Before you avail yourself for the auditions, here are some of the things you should expect:

1. Read the whole script and make sure that you understand it. You will be required to grasp the character you would be representing; and how he/she relates with other characters in the film. It is expected of you to show the different attitudes your role has towards other characters that relate with him/her in the act. Also, knowing your character’s role would be important and don’t be afraid to read from the script if you miss out on a few words; but don’t overdo it.

2. Mind your behavior. Most of us have particular mannerisms which may not be acceptable at the auditioning room. Some of them are chewing gum, talking too much and forgetting your instructions, touching the director or any of his/her possessions, smoking and so on. You may be used to them; but it’s advisable to shun these behaviors or else you may piss off the casting director and therefore not stand a chance.

3. Show respect to everyone in the room. When you enter the audition centre, there may be one or two people who you may easily recognize, but also complete strangers can be present. These people may be the stylist, camera man and may be a representative from a particular acting organization. To test you, the representative may wear shabby clothes such that you may be tempted to assume the person’s of no good. Then he may wait till all the others have asked you their questions and then ask you a very simple question. If you reply rudely or mockingly, most probably you’ll be shown the door.

4. Be brief and do what’s expected of you. By the time it’s your turn to be auditioned, the panel would already be tired since other people had already passed through them. Make their job simple by giving a very brief introduction of yourself and offer your best performance at the shortest time possible. Avoid repeating words or saying things that don’t make sense as this may be an indication of nervousness.

5. Always be prepared. The panel may direct you to do something that you didn’t think of; for example, they may want you to run around the podium in a particular manner or laugh in a particular style. Always be ready for the unexpected as they may want to test whether you may be creative enough to fill some blank spaces on the character they have chosen for you.

6. Stage presence. Try to be part and parcel of those you are working with. Remember the panel has taken its time to assess you and they need to be treated deservingly. Answer the questions they ask you and laugh with them when they crack joke, but also be aware as they may be testing you. Just do anything to show them that you are there with them and not day dreaming.

Finally, when signing out of the audition centre don’t forget to thank the people who assisted you. These are the people you talked to from the time you came to when you leave the premise. Also, make sure you sign out your name as this may be used to check the amount of time you spent at the auditions.
