Auditions are basically venues where one is allowed to showcase his/her talents to a panel of judges who represent a particular organization. The panel has a set of requirements which only the best candidate can pass; after which he/she would be hired to represent the organization in the specific field the person auditioned for, or would be given some reward. There are various kinds of auditions which may include: comedy auditions, music auditions, acting auditions, talent auditions and so on. In order to succeed you have to know how to present yourself before each of these panels, as they all require different things.
Comedy auditions.

If you think you can make even a stone shed some tears of laughter, then this is the place for you. You need to be alert at all times as a stand up comic as every word that comes out of your mouth matters, a little juggle of ideas that don’t make sense may place you at a disadvantage against your competitors. Another aspect in this career is courage. A stand up should always be willing to face people at any time they are called to present; if you present yourself before the panel fidgeting and jumbling your words, you may not pass through. Another trait you should have is the ability to read the audience’s mood. Some of the jokes you make may be funny to you but not to the majority of people who are listening to you. One man’s meat is another man’s poison; people have different types of humour and what may tickle one person can also be extremely boring to another person in the same room. A good comedian strikes a balance between the good and the bad.

Monotony is when you repeat the same joke over and over again. You may want to avoid this as it would give out the impression that you don’t have ideas and you are just struggling to make people laugh.

Try to avoid sensitive topics. Sometimes the audience may partially respond to your jokes. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you are boring, it may be that the topic you have chosen to crack jokes on is too sensitive for some people in the room; for example, most people find jokes that touch on religion offensive.

Music auditions.

The panel is mainly concerned with whether you have the ability to identify your type of voice, and then use it in such a way that it would be appealing to the listener. The main characteristic that most judges look for in such a show is liveliness; most of them don’t appreciate people who sing as if they are being forced to do so. Acts like singing at low volume, and standing at one point without moving the body while holding the microphone tight would definitely piss them off.

Knowing the exact words of the song you’ll be presenting to the panel is a must; carefully choose the song which you are comfortable with and not necessarily the one which you like but don’t know all the words. You can then practice regularly for you to develop a bond with this new song which you have chosen.

Moreover, courage is essential for one to succeed in this area. You depict your courage by the way you conduct yourself; for example, when asked questions by the panel try to answer them as best as you can and always remember to keep that eye contact with them.

Looking down would give them an impression that you are not interested, even if you are genuinely shy.
