Most electronic cigarettes available today use a lithium-ion rechargeable battery to power the heating element. The battery life is dictated by the battery type and size, frequency of use, and operating environment. The battery unit is usually the largest portion of a smokeless cigarette.

The nicotine is delivered by being dissolved. Usually either propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin is used, but sometimes the mixture uses both.
