Considerations in Shopping For Treadmills

A lot of people are a little scared to actually take a good look in the mirror at themselves when they get out of bed in the morning, since for many people the first thing they see is that extra weight they are packing. Many people will sooner or later come to the conclusion that its really time to put a real effort into losing that extra weight, and with that in mind, they grab their credit cards or check books, and head out to do some shopping for treadmills.

Treadmills offer a myriad of benefits to regular users. By jumping on with regularity, tread millers can burn calories, increase their overall energy, and lose some of that extra weight.

Probably one of the key questions to answer is how fast will you be going, when you actually get on the treadmill. Walking at a good rate, maybe adding in some light jogging, or running full speed, all good machines should have a wide variety of speeds for you to be able to use. Keep in mind that most people out for exercise walk at about 3 to 4 miles per hour, while runners usually get upwards of 6 to 10 miles per hour.

One of the nicest features about good treadmills is that a user can add in some incline to their walking, jogging, or running. The incline feature can be changed either manually, or electronically, depending on what kind of a unit you purchase. The majority of treadmills will have a feature allowing for an incline to be raised as much as 10%. That may not sound like much, but just imagine walking up a hill outside your home, that has a 10% incline. That will give you a great workout in a short period of time!

Treadmill shoppers also want to make sure they find the right size before they buy. Make sure you find one that has a large enough belt. If the main purpose is for walking, that means probably a shorter belt than one who will use it for jogging or running. Also spend some time investigating the belt itself, to see if it has some kind of cushioning. The last thing a new treadmill user wants to worry about is injuries caused by the pounding of their joints on a rock-hard belt.

Other factors to take into account include the computer system that runs the machine. Small computers now work on almost all treadmills, but spend a few minutes before you purchase the machine to make sure you can figure it out and that it is easy to work.

Also, how well will the machine fit in your home or office is also another factor. It might be a really good idea to try to find a machine that folds up easily to save space, or has wheels allowing for it to be maneuvered out of the way.

Finally, a major thing to look for when shopping for a treadmill is to make sure it has an emergency shut off switch. This can bring the machine to a stop if you happen to fall off, or get ill while working out. Many machines have a cord that attaches the machine, with a clip to your pants or shirt, so that if you happen to get too far away from the machine, the cord cuts out and the machine automatically slows to a halt.
