Environmental and Human Right Problems in the Holiday Resort of Dubai

Dubai has the glamour of Las Vegas to those of us that are attracted to outrageous places of wealth and money. This article explores the cost to the poor human species and the unchecked growth of wealth.

For those of you that have been to Dubai you will know its as glitzy as New York as tolerant as the UK when compared to other Arab nations. Tall skyscrapers, beeches, grand prix tracks, luxury hotels and dune buggy safaris are all on offer in this holiday paradise. Lucrative jobs with tax free wages are on offer to those with the skills to succeed in this oasis.

For those with money to spend the biggest shopping malls with top class brands are there to buy and show off. But as the old saying goes don\’t judge a book by its cover.

Underneath this perfect appearance lies allegations of slave labour and mistreatment of foreign workers as locals are too proud and not willing to work for a pittance in often terrible working conditions which often involve working long hours 7 days a week in the intense mid day heat and this was before the recession hit and companies were under increased pressure to cut costs. Bonded laborers may be on the increase and unions are illegal and will be kept that way in order to keep costs down.

The majority of the workforce that fuelled this building boom is foreign workers that often had to pay a fee to access these jobs often with high interest rates. When they arrive in countries in the Middle East the passport is often confiscated and returned at the end of the assignment. If pay and conditions are not what is expected then monies and passport are not returned and they are often trapped in appalling conditions.

These workers would enjoy cooling down in the biggest man made indoor ski slope in the Middle East or on the beach which is being built which will be artificially cooled by underground tubes. If this is not enough decadence for one day then what about the water cooled golf courses design by Tiger Woods.

If this display of wealth means that you feel sick thinking about the disparity of the haves and have nots then you are not alone as the worlds media has picked up on this senseless waste of energy and money when people are starving in the world.

The number of cars on the road has multiplied ten fold in the past decade leading to a reduction in air quality and increased smog. The amount of planes and transportation needed to import all the luxury items and food is leading to a further deterioration in climate change. Would not be better to use all this technology and money for Dubai to become more self sufficient as opposed to building bigger and better things for show? What about investing in cutting edge technology and research and development for eco friendly air conditioning units to reduce financial and environmental costs in Dubai and other hot countries.

You must have seen the palm shaped island that they have built into the sea which is claimed to be the eighth wonder of the world.
