List Builders Are Not Spammers
This is the last straw. The new targets of spammers are the good people who want to help the people in New Zealand after the earthquake. As a legitimate Internet marketing specialist, I am following the developments with condemnation. List building is a very productive way of online marketing. It is also beneficial for the consumer. It helps businesses find the clients that need their goods and services. It is also a term used by spammers. While we choose each and every name in our mailing lists with utmost care, they just fill their mail lists with everything they find that contains the letter \”@\”.
The earthquake with the magnitude of 6.3 killed more than 75 people and hundreds of people are still missing in New Zealand. It didn’t take long for the spammers. Right now there are more than 100 fake relief funds that claim they will help the people of Christchurch, trying to collect money using e-mail lists.
According to Cisco Systems’ 2008 Annual Report, more than 90% of all e-mails are spams. Before the internet the cheapest way to send a letter was by using national post services’ ground mail and even that had a price. Even the conmen were choosing who to send their fraudulent letters with great care. Also senders of real letters were easier to find and catch. After recognition of e-mail system by the masses, the cost of communication was reduced to zero. This was the stroke of fortune for scammers. With the new dawn, a new generation of criminals was born.
There are some decent filters against spam mail. Web mail services like Gmail and Yahoo also use good filters. Without these filters, e-mail communication would come to an end about 10 years ago because it would be impossible to separate real mail from the spam. According to Internet World Stats database there are 2 billion internet users in the world. This means 2 billion potential clients for spammers.
Some countries have laws against spammers. However the international nature of the Internet makes it very hard to stop spam mail legally. Some countries don’t have any laws about this problem and Bulgaria has a law of electronic commerce that legitimizes spam e-mails. Because of this corporations are trying to strengthen their spam filters every day.
As a decent Internet marketing specialist, I hate it when people think what I do is spamming their mails. The main difference between internet marketers and spammers is that we send mails to the people who want to receive those mails. List building is a hard craft. You can’t find the e-mail address of a man in my list for beauty products or the address of a woman if I were to build a list for a moustache trimming scissors. Spammers don’t distinguish. They may send immoral mails to children or breast enlargement ads to men. They also have no sense of morality or professionalism. The best way to stop them would be a global law but for that, I’m afraid, we will have to wait another 10 or 20 years.
