More Habits That Will Change Your Life

In our last chapter, we looked at 15 new habits you should consider adopting if you want to drastically change your life. Upon further reflection, we have come up with 15 more. Hopefully out of a total of 30 suggestions, you can come across at least a few that will make the difference in your health and general well being.

Eat breakfast every day. Too many of us rush out the door to school or work every morning, skipping the most important meal of the day. Even a bowl of nutritious cereal (no Froot Loops, please) will be better for you than overlooking it altogether.

Knock off the between meal snacks. This is a surefire way to gain weight, especially if what you are eating isn’t particularly nutritious. If you must knock down your hunger mid morning, then choose some fresh fruit or granola bars.

Make fish part of your diet. Fish is an excellent source of omega 3 and other healthy elements. Even if you don’t like fish, try to do at least one meal a week in order to fulfill these requirements.

Cut down on the sodas. Cokes and Pepsis are among the least healthy beverages you can find. Free yourself from the temptation for a couple of weeks and see if you don’t feel better due to that decision alone.

Quit smoking. Unlike drinking, where one beer or glass of wine a day might actually be helpful, there is nothing at all beneficial about smoking. At best it makes your clothes stink and you become offensive to other people, and at worst it can cause lung cancer and heart disease, both of which may be fatal.

Forget the elevator and take the stairs. You can get a nice workout on the way into the office every morning just by running those stairs. And no, escalators don’t count.

Develop an inbox system, something designed to keep accurate track of all ideas, suggestions, work assignments, etc that come to you every day. Having it all in one place makes it easier to sort through, process, and organize.

Don’t overplan. Some people like to plan their activities weeks or even months out, but it is very hard to keep track of everything. Confine your detailed planning to a week or two in advance.

Don’t become addicted to your e-mail box. Many of us check our e-mail box constantly during the day, which becomes a waste of precious time. We all grew up checking our real mail box once every day, so adopt the same policy with your e-mail.

Clean up. When your mother said to clean your room, she had a reason in mind. A clean room or work area does wonders for maintaining your focus and jump starting your creativity.

When you set goals, also set a deadline. You’ll be surprised at just how much a deadline does for your focus, enabling you to be more efficient at completing your assignments or projects.

Think positively. If you are a pessimist, learn to channel your energy in more productive avenues. There is a lot to be said for the power of positive thinking.

Don’t impulse buy. If you see something that catches your eye, make yourself wait at least 48 hours before making the purchase. You’d be surprised just how much you can lose enthusiasm over something over the course of two days.

Begin a blog or journal. Blogging or journaling can be productive, therapeutic, and provides quite the sense of accomplishment. Online blogs can also increase your visibility significantly if done well.

Assemble a portfolio. No matter what you do career wise, or what you are into in your off hours, building a portfolio is a great way to be able to introduce other people to who you are, what you are about, and what you are capable of doing.

I am not saying that you have to incorporate all of these elements into your life, but finding even two or three can have a major impact on your life in a very good way.
