Nopalea and Fiber
It seems like the importance of fiber in our diets became crystal clear in the 1970s when every other commercial was about some food that contained that necessary dietary fiber we all needed.
There are many ways to get fiber, including chemical concoctions that you eat by the teaspoonful in your glass of water, but possibly the best source of dietary fiber is only recently being explored. The Nopal Cactus is an excellent source of dietary fiber.
A really easy way to get the benefits of the Nopal Cactus is to drink Nopalea Juice, which is made from the cactus, which is also known as the prickly pear cactus.
It is believed that the eating of this cactus as both a food and for medicinal purposes dates back to the time of the Aztecs. The plant is rich in insoluble and soluble fiber. It is also chock full of vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, riboflavin, and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and manganese.
Because of its high fiber content, the plant is being studied as a possible remedy to diabetes. Scientists and researchers are working hard to look at the prickly pear cactus and how it can not only help diabetes, but also help prevent or help a host of other ailments. (Because it is believed the plant is a natural anti-inflammatory, it is being looked at in helping with many diseases that are now thought to be linked to chronic inflammation, such as Alzheimer’s and colon cancer.)
The renowned Dr. Oz did a spot on his television show that demonstrated how the prickly pear cactus might help with diabetes. During the episode, Dr. Oz and another doctor did a demonstration involving sugar, a huge hourglass and the plant. First Dr. Oz poured sugar into the top of the hourglass showing how quickly the sugar will flow into the bloodstream once people ingest it. In that demonstration, the sugar flowed through easily and quickly to the bottom half of the hourglass.
In the second instance, Dr. Oz put some of the prickly pear cactus in the top half of the hourglass before he poured the sugar in. The high fiber dense plant acted as a natural filter and both slowed and regulated the speed and amount of sugar that filtered through to the bottom of the hourglass.
In that same way, Dr. Oz explained, the prickly pear cactus can regulate the flow of sugar into a person’s bloodstream. The ability to regulate the blood sugar levels is really the key to preventing diabetes. This remedy is all natural which makes it even more exciting for people who hesitate to treat health problems with chemicals or medicines made in a laboratory.
Researchers are looking at the health benefits of Nopalea Juice and how this wonder juice can not only help with ailments people face right now, but also can help prevent future health problems. There aren’t a lot of natural foods that can boast this ability, so it is definitely worth exploring further.
