The Search for the True Pool Excellence: Bromine: Bromine vs. Chlorine

The battle between bromine and chlorine has been a long time coming. Both have been deemed for popularity around household pools particularly in the U.S., Australia and U.K. Many discussions and debates have circled through the web and the news about the credibility of these two components. Of course people would have their own opinions about them; in terms of how they work and perform and etc. But which is it? Which is better? What is the low down on these two pool sanitizers?

Let us take a look at the facts that were declared by pool experts worldwide.

ON THE BLUE CORNER: CHLORINE

AN INTRODUCTION
Chlorine was discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1774. It can now be found at group 17 in the periodic table. It is a member of the salt family, and being so, makes it a very good sanitizing agent. This element has been used for bleaching and extensive cleaning, thus making it an oxidant to be reckoned with.

WHAT TO BRAG ABOUT
Chlorine is very abundant in the atmosphere, making it highly accessible. It is also essential to all living things and is vital for survival and species multiplication.
Chlorine usually works faster that bromine when it comes to hot tubs, mini pools and Jacuzzis. It works well with green, smelly and cloudy pool water as well.

WHAT PUTS IT TO SHAME
Chlorine has a very strong chemical smell. Inhaling it’s aroma can completely damage the respiratory system, or worse — it can be fatal. Chlorine has also been banned especially in the form of chloroflurocarbons, (usually in refrigerators and some cleaning sprays and perfumes) since it has been proven to have been one of the underlying factors of the depletion of the ozone layer.

Another downside to chlorine is how it actually works on the pool. Chlorine does stick itself unto those microorganisms and algae but when it does, it can no longer sanitize your pool. In other words, this compound is not and never will be a multi-tasker. This is the reason why there is a need to apply 2 or even 3 chlorine tablets a day on your pool. The chlorine levels on your pool will always read low after 5-8 hours of applying it.

ON THE RED CORNER: BROMINE

AN INTRODUCTION
This element was lawfully and individually discovered by Carl Jacob Lowig and Antoine Balard in 1825 and 1826. Bromine actually is a prominent member of the salt family.

WHAT TO BRAG ABOUT
Bromine gets an A plus when it comes to its performance on your pool once it’s applied. Unlike chlorine, bromine is a born multi-tasker. It attaches itself to algae and other microorganisms on your pool at the same time it continues to sanitize and clean the pool water. This is the reason why you should only reload on the bromine distribution on a weekly basis. Again, compared to chlorine, bromine lasts longer and still reads on high even after 3 – 5 days.

Bromine is proven to be 2 times stronger than chlorine.

WHAT PUTS IT TO SHAME
As opposed to chlorine, bromine is not abundant in nature. Also it is highly toxic and corrosive. Bromine was also identified as one of the underlying factors behind the depletion of the ozone layer.

Bromine has its own chemical smell but it is less disturbing than what chlorine delivers.

So it is chlorine or bromine? The facts have all been laid out for you to see. You decide.
