Ask the Orthodontist: Miami Expert Grussmark Compares Lingual Braces & Invisalign

MIAMI, CORAL GABLES, BRICKELL AND MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – Dr. Stephen Grussmark notices the manner in which an image-conscious society drives orthodontic treatment every time he sees patients who voice their opposition to traditional metal braces.

Patients who do not want traditional braces and educate themselves before having an orthodontic evaluation tend to inquire about lingual braces or Invisalign. Miami, FL orthodontist Grussmark, an Invisalign Elite Premier Provider, decided it was time to fully explain the two treatment methods, complete with benefits and drawbacks, due to those inquiries.

Invisalign
Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners that gradually shift a patient’s teeth into proper placement. They are practically unnoticeable when worn.

\”Lots of patients see Invisalign as the optimal orthodontic treatment because others don’t notice the aligners when they’re worn, and they offer freedom in terms of diet,\” Grussmark said.
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, no food is off limits to the patient undergoing Invisalign treatment.

The aligners feel comfortable when patients wear them because they are made from a molded, smooth plastic. Treatment often is completed more quickly with Invisalign.

Although many professionals see Invisalign as having benefits over lingual braces in orthodontics, Miami orthodontist Grussmark said there is at least one movement that may be treated more effectively with bonded brackets instead of with Invisalign. That movement is root paralleling. Root paralleling is required in cases where a patient needed to have a tooth or multiple teeth extracted and now the roots and the teeth adjacent to the extraction site must be shifted to close the space.

Lingual Braces
The technology behind lingual braces has been around for nearly 40 years. Instead of being bonded to the front of the teeth, lingual braces are fixed appliances that are bonded to the back of the teeth, making them unnoticeable to anyone but the wearer, Grussmark said. Some brands of lingual braces come in standard shapes and sizes, while others are custom-made to fit each individual patient’s teeth.

Much progress has been made by some makers of lingual braces in terms of shape and comfort to the wearer over the years. Lower profile options are available, which can provide a bit more comfort. However, discomfort for some patients remains a drawback.

\”Adults who wear lingual braces sometimes complain about having braces on the back of their teeth because their tongue can be sensitive to the appliances,\” Grussmark said.

Lingual braces also can- in cases where teeth have been extracted and the space needs to be closed- expedite the positioning of the roots, to allow them to become more parallel, said Dr.Grussmark.

Patients who have considered looking into orthodontic treatment that isn’t as noticeable as traditional braces should consult an orthodontist and have a thorough evaluation performed so the orthodontist can determine if the patient is a good candidate for Invisalign, Grussmark said.
