Being a helper to a therapist requires you to provide treatment to patients that will improve their mobility. Doing this will help relieve pain and prevent other disabilities from worsening. If pain cannot be prevented then it will be lessened depending on their condition. Patients will take their time in this process of rebuilding their strength. Most of them will understand the time frame of which their condition will heal, and some will rush through the process.

Assistants will help patients exercise or learn to use crutches or walkers if needed. One of the most popular reasons for the demand in this career path was to provide care for accident victims or people that are disabled. Certain disabilities will include lower back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries and cerebral palsy. Cancer patients are also included in these types of treatments.

Normally a therapist will be the one who actually treats the patients. A therapist aide will help the therapist provide that treatment if needed. The aide will record a patients responses to treatment and also report the outcome to the therapist. This will determine if the treatment will need to be changed.

This job also requires a workout. In some cases you may come across a patient who will need to be lifted to perform a certain type of treatment. Frequent movements are also expected from you during certain times of performing the job duties. It is always good to stretch out a little before taking on a new patients case. This will help you in being able to help more than one person each day.

Most outpatient places have evening and weekend hours to coincide with their patients personal schedules. Most of these patients are prevented from walking and are unable to drive themselves to the facility.

To actually become a therapist helper you must have an associates degree. This degree can come from any accredited program within that specific career path. Programs are usually divided into academic coursework and hands on clinical experience. The reason for this is that most offices will require licensing before hiring anyone. This is only because of the many responsibilities they have during the job.

Most physical therapy assistant jobs can be found online. As for regular physical therapy jobs, employment requirements can differ from that of an assistant. This position requires being well organized, detail oriented and caring as well as being able to take direction and working well in team situations. You basically have to be a very focused person when performing these acts.
