Becoming a fashion designer sound like a glamorous career, but it’s not that easy to become one. It may seem like all they do is draw dresses and have them made, but there’s a lot that happens behind the curtain.

Being a fashion designer means staying up late nights, constantly monitoring how the clothes are going and not to mention that you also have to make sure the quality of the dresses are beyond excellent. Still want to become a fashion designer? Well, read ahead.

Start building your portfolio early. It’s never early enough to start creating a portfolio, and you can just add new creations as you go along. A portfolio is important early in your career, as this will help you get into a good school. A lot of schools are offering fashion design courses, but this doesn’t always mean they offer the best. Do a research on the best fashion design schools in the country, and do your best to get admitted.

Another important reason for having an impressive portfolio is applying for a job. Unlike other careers where they get to work before they get to impress the boss, working as a fashion designer means impressing the boss during the interview and then impressing them more when you get the job.

There are several things to keep in mind when creating a portfolio. It is important that you show off your skills such as design development, sketching ability and textile knowledge. Prevent making a portfolio that’s full of too much art. Make sure to show your creations instead of adding too many decorations to the portfolio itself.

Internship and Apprenticeship. Unless you’re celebrity, there’s no way that you can jumpstart your career as a fashion designer without any experience. This is a very important part of starting a career in the world of fashion design, so make sure that you learn as much as you can during internship. Going through internship and apprenticeship is also a great way of building your resume, while the experience teaches you at the same time.

It is quite difficult to get an internship if you’re after a prestigious house, so make sure to use all resources possible. If you have a teacher, an instructor, an aunt, a cousin or even a neighbor who knows someone in the industry; ask them for help. They might put a good word for you, or maybe give a recommendation.

If you’re one of the majorities who doesn’t know anybody who knows anybody in the fashion industry, don’t worry because there is hope. Take magazines out, find numbers on the yellow pages or scour the internet for contact information on the world’s top fashion houses. Call them up, find out what you need and polish your portfolio according to their standards. If you are just determined enough, I’m sure you’ll be successful in the industry and maybe have your name along with Dominico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and Gianni Versace.
