Finding the Musician in You by Playing Guitar
It is not uncommon for people to find themselves searching for something special they can do to help balance the work and stress of daily living. Every day we must manage our families, work and the basic needs of life. We drive to work, try to keep ahead of our debts, shuttle kids to school and perform all manner of activities that keep our lives and families running. Just as important is the need to take a break at some point. Everyone needs a little relaxation. Some folks read, some jog, some paint and some play music. Try different activities to find what works best for you, but playing guitar is a great option.
There are many instruments to choose from out there, pianos, trumpets, violins, accordions, drums and hundreds of others. Some are very well known and others are known only in certain regions of the world. The features of a guitar that are hard to beat are that it is very portable, it offers the ability to either be a rhythm instrument or a melody instrument in a group setting and it can also be a solo instrument.
Guitars can be separated into two main categories, acoustic and electric. Acoustic guitars are hollow and larger, have a thin panel of wood as the main part of the front of the body, and has a good size hole in the middle that projects the sound made by strumming the strings.
Electric guitars make very little sound when not connected to an amplifier. But once plugged in they can be turned up to a much louder volume that an acoustic could ever achieve. Electric guitars have much thinner strings and are therefore much easier on the fingers.
Most of us have heard a solo artist playing a guitar to accompany their singing. There is something very soothing about a simple song accompanied by guitar strumming that brings on a feeling of deep relaxation and comfort.
Getting started with guitar can be challenging, but it\’s really a matter of having the patience to stick with it as you go through the process of teaching the fingers of both hands to work in coordination with each other. It can be hard, painful and frustrating at times.
A good method is to take a beginning guitar class so that you learn the basics from an experienced teacher who can help you avoid picking up bad habits. The class setting will also allow you to see techniques that others use and allow you to make friends to practice with. Your teacher will teach you the basic chords and a few songs to get you going, because the learning is always more fun when you do it in the context of playing songs.
Pretty soon, if you keep working at it, you\’ll be able to play for your friends or maybe just for your sweetheart. If you are a bit shy, playing guitar will help break the ice and help you meet new people. Eventually, you might start or join a band, which can be a lot of fun because working together you can make great music that adds joy to your life.
