Although, the majority of the population is law-abiding citizens, there are those who will try to take something that does not belong to them, or get involved in some rather nefarious pursuits which will bring them trouble from the police. Of course, it is likely that at some point, they will get caught out or accused and it is at these times when they need the help of a criminal defense attorney. A criminal defense lawyer may have quite a tough job here, depending on what evidence the police will bring to court, so it is vital that the accused finds someone who is up to the job.

Some cases are difficult because the line between right and wrong is somehow blurred. For example, even those who have defended themselves when burglars have invaded the home may find themselves on the wrong end of the law. The law allows for someone to adequately defend himself and his property. This does not mean that he can shoot someone in the back as he tries to escape through a window. Nor does it mean that he can beat someone to death. It means that he can use reasonable force to hold the thief or stop him from attacking the householder or any of the inhabitants.

This ‘reasonable force’ is what will get a lot of people into trouble. In fact, there have been many cases where someone was made an example of merely to send out a warning to others so that the crime rate can be brought down. However, this is not really justice so the expert must be aware of this right from the start.

Although, everyone is entitled to legal representation, they sometimes cannot afford the rates that some of the experts charge. In law, if the accused does not have the means to pay, an expert will be appointed to him. This public defender has all the attributes of the other experts, but he will have an enormous work load and it is this that most people want to avoid. It is much better then to find an expert outside the court so that a good case can be built.
