Finding the Right Private School
If you are looking for a private school for your child, you will need to find out what you would like from the private sector. Parents will often compare local independent institution to public places of learning to see if the private sector is the better choice.
Independent locations of learning can vary in what they offer. They can be same sex buildings or they can have both boys and girls. They can be a day institution only or they can also allow for boarders. Some places cross all grade levels. Others are elementary or high school.
Most of these institutions have uniforms for the students to wear. The uniforms will represent the school colors. The clothing might consist of dress pants for boys, a skirt or kilt for girls, a blazer, sweater or cardigan with the school crest, a dress shirt for boys and blouse for girls, and tie. Proper footwear is often part of the uniform, as well. Low heeled dress shoes or loafers are often worn by the students.
These places of education may have specialty programs offered. Examples of this would be a dramatic arts location or an institution that specializes in outdoor athletics. You will want to consider the sports, clubs and extra-curricular activities an establishment has to offer. Being a member of a club or sports team might be mandatory as part of the school requirements. This helps build a strong community.
You can take a tour to see the facilities. Due to private funding, they may have great resources and grounds. They may have a theatre, swimming pool, tennis courts, running track, ice hockey rink or a variety of different fields for sports.
Private schools have a selection process due to limited spaces. An interview and entrance exam may be a requirement. The entrance exams are often standard tests that your child can prepare for. It is important to receive information on how long the selection process can take. There may be a money deposit required with applying to a particular location.
There is also a fee to attend these institutions since they do not receive full funding from the government. These fees can vary depending on the type of learning place. Highly acclaimed schools can cost more than smaller and younger education establishments. Some independent schools might have subsidies from the government therefore allowing for lower annual fees.
Requesting information about a particular place is helpful. This information can be acquired by the internet or telephone. Most places have their own websites that can answer a variety of questions you may have. The websites also have photos and a full outline of what the private school has to offer including the history, the percentage of graduates that attend post secondary institutions and recent activities that they have participated in.
When researching a private school, there are many things you will want to consider. It might be a special program that you are looking for or a reputation that you have heard about. Other parents send their children to these institutions based on tradition.
