General Facts on Video Game Design

Video game design always starts with a concept. Maybe someone wants to create a game about a kid and his dog who go on adventures to save their hometown from corporate takeovers. The item would then be created around this loose framework, and altered to create the best playing, best looking game that fits within the budget.

Game-play has to be created in several different ways. The idea has arrive-is it going to be platform based? Will the player be able to switch between first and third person view points? The conceptualization of the game-play is typically tied in to the story of the item. While different variations are suitable for many different stories, looking at reviews of other products can help designers to make executive decisions on these issues.

For example, first person shooters are a great genre, but the way that their game-play works would not make as much sense for a medieval genre product that focused on quests. After game-play has been decided on, the codes for it need to be created.

Sometimes the writers of the story are able to do this, but many times it is a collaboration between several different people. Coding is a difficult process that has to be completed painstakingly, run for bugs and trouble-shot until the creators are sure that the product will run on the consoles it is being created for.

Low budget items may crash or have more bugs than others despite great graphics and game-play simply because there was not enough funding to trouble-shoot the product enough prior to release. This dos not mean that they are permanently bugged though-companies often release fixes through the internet that can be downloaded onto consoles throughout the life of the item.

The artwork is a big part of a products success as well. Not only the art on the case, but the graphics throughout the entire program. Some artists still choose to do the entire design by hand, but many will mix the rough sketches with computer designed pieces to make animation faster. Some artists even create the entire graphics system on their computers. None of these methods is better than the other, they just create a different appearance for the final product.

The writer is also a major component of a products success. Exciting plot twists and unexpected endings are part of what keeps people playing. If the game-play is flawless and the graphics are incredible, someone can still put down their controller in disgust if the story is terrible. Even if it follows a cliched plot, as long as everything flows and creates an enjoyable overall experience, players will keep on playing.

After the game itself is created, someone has to work on promoting and advertising it. If nobody knows the game is coming out or reserves it, the poor sales can cause the company to go bankrupt. Video game design is expensive, and so it is important to build up a customer base even before release to ensure that they can continue to get fixes for bugs or promotions for new products the company is releasing.
