How to Avoid Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that is spreading like an epidemic these days. It can be caused due to genetics and heredity but the most common reason nowadays is the unhealthy, ignorant and fast-paced life style. Diabetes is not contagious, so you won’t contract it from others. It is just a situation where the level of glucose in your body increases. The hormone ‘Insulin’ produced in the human body regulates the glucose level. Diabetic people have unregulated insulin production in their body. Therefore, the best way out is to prevent this from happening. Avoid diabetes by eliminating the risk factor and adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes better nutrition and exercise.
Be conscious of your diet
The amount of sugar you intake should be checked specially if you have a family history of diabetes. You can lower your sugar intake by using reduced sugar or sugar free foods. Make sure your blood sugar level doesn’t go too high or too low. Keep your cholesterol level also under control. Eat fewer fried, fatty and sweet food. If you are eating out, go for grilled food and salads. Also skip sugary dessert; instead you can have fresh fruit salad without any fatty dressing. Drink plenty of water before starting your meal to reduce your appetite if you are on a diet. Keep your weight in check as it is a potential risk factor for acquiring diabetes.
Stop Smoking
Smoking is harmful as far as insulin resistance is concerned. Insulin resistance often leads to diabetes. Smoking is responsible for making people lethargic, thus increases weight, and in the end leads to diabetes. Smoking complicates many other health issues likes heart attack/stroke, nerve damage and kidney diseases. Therefore, smokers are more susceptible to diabetes.
Moderate your Drinking Habits
Moderate drinking increases the blood sugar to rise and if you drink excessively, your blood sugar can decrease to dangerous levels. Since it accentuates the appetite, it can cause you to overeat and thus affect your weight. So, if you must drink, do it in moderation. Never drink in empty stomach; have it along with food. Mix alcohol with water or diet soft drinks to bring down its after effects.
Exercise regularly
Exercise is the key to healthy lifestyle. If you are over-weight, you are at a potential risk of acquiring diabetes. In such a case, exercise can be your last resort to avoid that. For those of you who are not a fitness freak, start exercising in moderation. Just be conscious of including more and more physical activity in your day-to-day life. Chose stairs over an elevator go for morning/evening walks and walk your dog daily. Play with your kids in the park or wash your car by yourself. Any activity that keeps you from being lethargic is good.
Diabetes can only be controlled and not cured. Once present, it is there for life. Therefore, try to follow these tips in order to avoid diabetes. Also, go for regular checkups and ask your doctor to advise you on a proper diet plan so that it keeps a check of your blood pressure and weight.
