A few years ago, you had to take a mixed bag of classes and hope for the best. There was not set course of study for interior design. Thanks to an organization called FIDER, the Foundation of Interior Design Education Research, the classes have gelled together for accreditation. You can now go for your bachelors, masters, or even a doctorate. It is still a mixed bag of some of the toughest classes around, including business classes. Take as many of those as you can because you will need them. The trick is finding a FIDER accredited school at which to study since only about half of the U.S. even recognizes interior design as a legitimate career title. If you cannot find one in your area and you are still determined, you can always take the online approach.

– Will power: The Projects are hard at first and require many days of little or no sleep.

A Tough Education

Regardless of where you go, in order to become a recognized Interior Designer, you will need to cover six years of school and work experience, depending on what degree you shoot for. They hold you to a very high standard of practices and principles so if you can get financing for it, take as many years as you can. It is a top-notch education that is not for the weak of heart and only the serious minded need apply. Many people do not realize just how diverse the job is and what classes they will need to attain it successfully. For instance, you will want plenty of sales and marketing classes. You may as well throw in theatre and arts. The job involves a ton of sales, believe it or not. Computer aided drafting is a must.

Know What You Are Getting Into

Many people who have the wrong idea of exactly what interior or even exterior design is become disappointed and disillusioned. I too, have seen the movies where the writer of the script obviously hade no idea of what a designer does. This is especially true now. Wile you will get a chance at some decor work, the designer who is hire to design a mall of a home is more like a job superintendent. The majority of your time is spent selling your ideas and managing the time of every subcontractor who has their hand in the final outcome, be they painters or artisans.
