Lately, there has been considerable buzz on Barnes and Nobles’ ereader called the Nook Color, and upon learning about its features, you would know why.

The Nook Color features a 7-inch vivid color display which displays 16 million colors. It also provides the users with a great 178-degree viewing angle that’s perfect for sharing and reducing glare. The font size, style, color, and line spacing can be changed, and this is considered a great feature for those who might want to adjust the Nook Color’s settings according to their preferences.

Although running on a heavily-modified version of the Android 2.2, it lacks the typical layout found in a fully-integrated Android tablet. But the good thing about the Nook Color is that it can be rooted to become a fully-integrated Android tablet. That is definitely good news for Nook tablet fans out there. To be able to go ahead with the rooting process, these preconditions must be satisfied:

a. You must have an external SD card reader.

b. You must have a YouTube and a Gmail account. If a Gmail account was used to create an account on Barnes & Noble, use the same account to link it to the YouTube account.

c. Check that the Nook Color to be rooted has the 1.0.1 or 1.10 firmware version. To check the nook tablet’s firmware version, click on the Arrow button, then go to Settings, then to Device Info, then to About your Nook Color. Displayed there is the software version. To update firmware version from 1.0.0, there is a downloadable software update which can be easily found on the Internet.

To root Nook color does not necessarily imply that it is being hacked. Rooting is done to be able to use the device’s full capabilities. To do so, here are the steps:

a. Download the AutoNooter file for firmware version.

b. Extract it on a new folder on your computer.

c. Download an application called WinImage.

d. Get your Micro SD card, put it on an external SD card reader, then connect this to your computer.

e. Run WinImage and go to Disk, then to Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive. Select the SD card reader then click on the AutoNooter.img file which you extracted earlier.

f. Turn your nook tablet off.

g. Take your Micro SD card and insert it in the tablet. Do not turn it on yet.

h. Plug your device to the computer using the USB cable. This will cause the device to boot.

i. Wait a few minutes and the Nook Color will reboot on its own when finished.

To set up your Nook Color:

a. After it boots up, follow the displayed prompts, selecting Skip for Sign In.

b. Select Enable Location Services.

c. Connect to WiFi and launch YouTube.

d. Go to Menu and select My Channel and login with your Gmail account.

e. Exit YouTube then go to Gmail in the extras tab.

f. Sign in Gmail, sync your Google account, and exit.

g. Open Market, accept the Terms and Conditions displayed, and download an application to see if it works.
