Making the Choice Between PPC or SEO Advertising

Search engines are most people\’s first point-of-call when it comes to using the internet, so it is important that if you want your business to succeed, whatever it is that your business does, you ought to have a first-rate ranking on search engines.

There are two main ways of getting your page rankings up: Pay-per-click (PPP), which involves using Adwords to get your site into the \’sponsored links\’ area, or search engine optimization (SEO), which involves tweaking a site \’organically\’ to help it remain at the top of search results pages.

Pay-per-click advertising has the advantages of being quick, easy and immediately effective. You will need to pay the search engine provider (for example, Google, through its AdWords product), and you should start getting page hits pretty quickly thereafter.

This is a great way to boost the popularity of your page during advertising campaigns, and they will bring your site to the top of the search results page immediately, for as long as you are paying for the service. When you stop paying, however, your page will fall back down the rankings as it will no long be in the \’sponsored links\’ section.

PPC advertising also has advantages in that some search engines offer a number of additional services within their advertising framework, such as the ability to exclude IP addresses from certain areas in which you don\’t want your ads to appear. This allows you to better narrow the target base of your ads.

This is where some people believe that search engine optimization has the upper hand. With SEO, you pay a team of search engine optimizers to carry out an optimization project for your site. You obviously have to pay for their services, too, and the process will take longer. But you may find that it is a more worthwhile long-term investment as your page should remain higher in search engine rankings for longer.

Something to consider when opting for the more organic methods of search engine optimization is that the process is only as good as the team of SEOs that you hire. You must make sure that your SEO team is professional and experienced if you desire to optimize your site properly.

It is also worth mentioning that some of the more aggressive search engine optimization techniques have landed SEO companies in trouble and have ended up being banned by Google. These companies\’ clients have lost out because of this, even though it was essentially out of their control. This is unlikely to happen, but using PPC advertising to gain rankings is, at least, a legitimate and risk-free practice.

Choosing SEO or PPC needs to be carefully considered. Think of PPC as a quick fix which will get you immediate results, and SEO as more of a long-term investment. But be sure that you carefully examine and weigh up the costs of each service before you make your decision, as presence within search rankings is very important for any business.
