Park Benches For Municipal Planning

Park benches for municipal planning projects offer civil engineers a wide range of choices that can be used to aesthetically compliment an enormous range of urban environments typically found in any American city.

With a diversity of colors, design styles, mounting options, and materials, city planners can seamlessly blend the aesthetic of outdoor furniture with that of nearby architecture and natural forms. The following examples represent just a few the more popular applications in which urban planners can use specific bench design styles.

Sometimes a minimalist contemporary look is preferred for certain municipal planning projects. This is often preferred in front of the newest buildings in town. Also, it is a preferred design in front of any establishment, such as a contemporary art museum, whose focus lies more with today and tomorrow than it does with the past.

Park benches here should feature a conservative look with a noticeably contemporary aesthetic. By contemporary, we mean something that challenges our perceptions of the comforting norm. Designs are symmetrical and feature their own unique beauty, but they do not fit into a standard view of the world the way more traditional, iconic forms tend to do.

In other parts of the city, municipal planning must focus on nature more than architecture. Benches here must compliment natural forms such as trees and bodies of water. We would immediately assume that this pertains only to city parks. In reality, there are many parts of the city where a natural look is needed to lend a more livable sense to the place.

Examples of this would be university campuses, corporate office parks, and newly remodeled historical districts. Park benches here look much better if they are made out of wood and evoke that archetypal image of the old wooden bench from a simpler, bygone era.

In still other parts of the city, business is the main order of the day and demands a focused, professional mindset to be correctly conducted. We see this reflected in the architecture of the major buildings in the financial districts of almost every American city. Municipal planning here should endeavor to support that architecture with park benches characterized by a very formal design.

The most popular models feature roll formed handles and very tiny perforations in the metal seats and backs. The bench looks almost, but not quite, solid when light hits it from the other side. Such a site is a good compliment to the steel and glass of any major bank building towering just behind it.

Municipal planning also focuses on building a city where creativity is encouraged. Without creativity, education and business are going to suffer. Consequently, more cities than ever before are looking to upgrade the neighborhoods where the majority of musicians and artists reside. Park benches in these areas should have a noticeable flair to their design. Anything that looks as though it were designed by an artist is appropriate for a street corner, sidewalk, courtyard, or even city park near one of the city’s major art galleries.
