Pointers Before Planning to Construct a Pool
Why not consider building a swimming pool of your own and don’t be swayed by disappointing stories related to pool construction. What is advisable before you start going over stacks of swimming pool magazines and ever think of inviting several contractors to submit their quotations for your proposed pool construction, is to go over the following guides to assist you before immersing further;
1. Building a pool is not similar to buying a car. Cars are built the same as they are churned out by factories that have standard patterns for every car. Swimming pools are custom constructed and their construction methodology varies with different standards used by pool contractors. Study their construction individually.
2. If you decided of having your pool constructed by a contractor, do not hesitate to ask questions. For all you know, the contractor won’t give you all the ideas you want to know. It’s good that you study your lessons well and keep asking questions so that your contractor would be impressed that you are knowledgeable about your project.
3. Do not invite more than five contractors to bid for your project. If you have many contractor bidders, the tendency would be that with all those many bidders, you will find it more difficult to decide which one is the best among say 10 or 15 contractors. Limit your choices to five in order to save you from procrastination.
4. Check all the backgrounds of those pool contractors that you have invited. In the evaluation process, their financial capabilities and technical qualifications must be taken into consideration. Do not just grab the lowest cost proposal for financial consideration. Your contractor might end up hitting the completion period without any accomplishment at all. Choose the one which is within your budget who is both financially and technically qualified to do the job. Do not conduct your bidding and investigation by phone, go out and see for yourself the office of your prospective contractor to gain a personal feeling about your pool contractors.
5. Do not assume that prices would go down at a certain period of time. Always provide an allowance on project cost in order to avoid frustration later when an added cost is required to finish the project. Cost does not go down, the normal thing is that they goes up and believe them to be.
6. Make sure that you have a written contract that would protect you and your contractor. Fill all the data required as in the name of the project, the contract cost, mode of payment, performance and guarantee bonds, contract time, change orders, price escalation clause, penal provisions, venue of actions and other applicable provisions which you have agreed upon. This is a vital requirement in your pool construction.
7. Do not concentrate more on the beauty aspects of the project but give equal devotion to its mechanical requirements also. Do not forget that your pool is useless if the pumping motor would not run when needed or your water lines are clogged when your need the water to be flushed out.
8. And lastly, give a piece of your mind on the security of your pool for your family and other bathers. Consider a fence or a pool covering for your little children’s protection. A fully lighted pool area is also worth considering for added protection.
