Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Cigar Review

Cigar: Churchill 7×48 Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
Wrapper: Honduras Strength: Mild to Medium
Binder: Mexico

The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 cigar is an old favorite among Patel fans, and is reminiscent of the early days when Rocky got his start during the cigar boom of the 1990\’s. Rocky made his first offerings through the Indian Tabac brand, and then diligently set out to learn everything he knew to create the RP brand that we all know and love today. Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 was made in Danli, Honduras with tobacco originally set aside for Astral cigars. It was believed that Astral cigars would be the next Monte Cristo, so U.S. Cigar stockpiled bales and bales of its wrapper leaf in its warehouses, some of which never made it to market. There were two types of leaf that remained to sit quietly and gracefully age while awaiting their calling: the 1990 Honduran broadleaf, and Ecuadorian Sumatra of 1992. When Patel came across these quietly ignored wrapper leafs, he snapped them up and subsequently made the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 and the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990. Rocky Patel is well known for making richly complex and balanced top of the line cigars. The RP V-90 features accolades of a 92 rating and has been included twice in Cigar Aficionado\’s Top 25 Cigars of the year.

Review of Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Churchill

This is a gorgeous hand-made cigar! The construction of the RP V-90 Churchill is flawless in construction. It is box-pressed with a deliciously dark, oily maduro wrapper that smells of cocoa and pepper. The double-banded maroon and gold band makes this cigar classic. The pre-light draw verifies the cocoa and pepper flavors accompanied with a bit of spiciness left on the palate.

When lit, expect a bomb of pepper which continues through the first third of the smoke. Tastes of cocoa and cedar are partnered with a pleasant tobacco taste with a bit of citrus that tops of the first third with finesse. The second third comes in with plumes of very cool smoke. The pepper bomb from the beginning settles into a close memory with new flavors coming through. Citrus, mocha, cedar, cocoa and leather appear with a hint of spiciness, showing the complexity, yet balance that the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is known for.

As this stick approaches the final third, there are no burn issues and the fuller bodied side of the smoke starts to appear. On the back of the throat sits hints of nicotine and pepper with leather and woody flavors on the palate. It ends with the sweetness from the 12 year old Maduro wrapper with a caramel essence and hints of citrus showing off its continually awesome draw. This delightful smoke burns evenly while having a light grey ash.

Overall, the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is an incredibly smooth and elegant smoke, having an aroma of aged tobacco with a hint of leather and tangy sweetness that fills the air. This is a cool and lingering mild to medium bodied smoke that would make an excellent morning cigar.
