Roulette History Decrypted
Roulette is considered as one of the most popular casino games – both in land based casinos and the online casino variant. Find out how the game came into prominence and became the most sought after casino game, gaining its nickname “The King of Casino Games”.
Roulette meaning ‘small wheel’ is said to have been invented by the famous French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal. It was during an attempt to make a perpetual motion (or perpetuum mobile Lat.) machine that Pascal came across the revolving invention. Through our understanding of modern physics we now know that perpetual motion is impossible, but this is how Roulette was invented nevertheless.
The game gained acknowledgement at the turn of the 19th century. Perhaps the first roulette wheel in Europe was a Parisian wheel at the Palais Royal in the year 1796, three years before the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleonic era. It can therefore be assumed that roulette can be associated with the days of the first formal formation of human rights and the end of European feudalism.
There is however some historical evidence pointing to a game with the same name being regulated in Quebec (modern Canada) some 38 years prior to that, in the year 1758.
Well after the turn of the 19th century, the game gained popularity throughout the rest of Europe and made its mark in the United States. The game was soon the most played in casinos and gambling houses of the new and old worlds. When gambling was abolished in a number of European states, Monte Carlo became the hub for the European elite and roulette, in its single-zero form, was now the preferred game, whilst the double-zero version was the more favored version in the US.
The Wild West, and most specifically the 1848 Gold Rush and the discovery of gold by James Marshall, is the best associated period of roulette gaming in the United States, although the Vegas days are also quite prominent.
Today roulette is still one of the most popular games at casino establishments around the world. Almost all players who frequent land based and online casinos are knowledgeable in the games’ rules. In the online variation players can now choose to play American of European roulette at the click of a button. Throughout the years of roulette, players and professional gamblers have devised a number of betting systems that can be used to reduce the house’s edge – at least theoretically.
Perhaps the most popular system is known as the Martingale system where players double the bet after every loss. Other betting systems work within a sequence of numbers, colors or lines rather than the exponents of a particular bets. For example, some players will work within the numbers of the 3rd 12 and will only bet on the numbers between 25 and 36. This way they can concentrate on a few numbers if they happen to spot a landing pattern from previous spins and outcomes.
