Sliding Glass Doors: Adding Beauty and Character

Sliding glass doors offer practicality and functionality, making it a very common choice for household owners. However, they pose a problem during winter since they create a huge amount of heat loss. Nevertheless, they can be the main feature of the room if you know how to treat them. Here are some indispensable factors you need to consider when choosing the right window treatments for sliding glass doors:

1. The traffic;
2. Your budget;
3. Priority (Light or privacy);
4. Children, pets, or a clumsy spouse; and
5. Other treatments in the room

If you are absolutely clueless or indecisive on what specific treatment you want to use for your glass door, you might find some ideas in this article.

A) Vertical Blinds are highly economic window treatments for sliding glass doors. These are made up of movable vertical slats attached to a track system. A special mechanism is used to control how much light you want to enter the room by turning the slats. You can also stack them to one side by using the same mechanism, which is either a string or a rod.

There are different slat materials you can choose from. There’s cloth, vinyl, and even wood. Perhaps the most common among these three is vinyl. The cloth slats are thick and have metal weights at the bottom to keep them straight. Of course, we also have the wooden slats. The slats are obviously thicker than the first two due to the physical constitution of the material.

B) Cellular Shades are in a way, similar to vertical blinds. These window treatments for sliding glass doors operate using a track but are made up of one-piece cloth paper material with a honeycomb pattern. Like the vertical blinds, a cellular shade also stacks neatly on either side of the glass door.

This treatment is undeniably sleek and adds drama and dimension to the room but it does have its down sides. Cellular shades are made up of fragile material, and worse, it’s one-piece. This means that if your cat decides to mark its territory and scratches on it, it’s goodbye entire cellular shade. Unlike the vertical blinds wherein you only have to replace ruined slats, you replace whole thing with this one-and it’s not at all cheap.

C) For more formal settings, the Pleated Sheers (aka vertical sheers, aka privacy sheers) make a very elegant choice. The names differ depending on what company made them but they’re all just the same-or very close to it. The sheers are akin to drapes in terms of appearance but operate much like a vertical blind. These window treatments for sliding glass doors are made up of pleated fabric which light up the room even when closed up. They are wonderful when placed in the dining room or living room. It places a deep sense of sophistication and class.

D) Curtains and drapes are perfect if you don’t want to spend a dollar-if you have a spare rod and large enough cloth that is. But even if it’s just a piece of cloth and a curtain rod you’re using as window treatments for sliding glass doors, you can still make it stylish and pleasing to the eye. Install dual layers of drapes to give it more character. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, create your own design. Give it a personal touch to keep it from being dull. Experiment. Be creative.

Remember, whatever you choose to put on your sliding glass door, it’s a reflection of the people who lives inside the house.
