Spring Season Heating System Home Safety Checklist

Now that spring season has arrived and we turn off our winter furnace thermostats to welcome the spring temperatures, we ought to bear in mind that safety is our top priority. As season shifts from cold winter to warm spring, each of us is giddy to get out of bed, dress up and go outside the house to enjoy the warm weather, outdoor activities and carry out the things written in our “to-do” list that has been growing fast during the cold winter months. It is also time to pay attention to spring and summer safety home and water heating as well as any home swimming pool safety concerns and pay attention to detail.

Here we will discuss the things that are often done during springtime. In the next paragraphs you will be presented with reminders about things that you must pay attention to ensure your family’s safety during spring and the ongoing summer seasons.

One of the things that you must consider once spring season kicks in is the safety in the yard. When you are planning to do projects that need some digging like building a fence, planting a tree or landscaping your lawn, you must remember that natural gas and other utility lines might be buried in your yard. It is a must that you determine the location of your natural gas line and utility lines before you strike your shovel unto your yard’s soil. It will also be best to give your utility a call before digging so they can send someone to your place and tell you the location of the lines, place some markers and provide location sheet with instructions on how you can carry out your plans safely. Moreover, when landscaping nears your gas regulators and meters, proper care must be observed. Avoid raising the level of the ground that it comes in contact with the regulator or meter for it can result to corrosion and will eventually lead to gas leakage.

Another thing you must have checked is your family swimming pool – that is if your home or neighborhood is lucky enough to have one. Before you start spending most of your time swimming in your pool, it is important to have your pool heater checked first. Your pool heater is just the same as other fuel burning equipment that requires regular maintenance to make sure it works properly. Get a licensed HVAC technician to check your pool heater.

Surely nothing beats grilling, barbecuing and drinking beers while enjoying the warm summer breeze just right in your own backyard. However, before doing so, it is a must for you to check the status of your barbecue. Read its manual and follow its maintenance directions. Our barbecue has not been used over the winter months hence it is only wise to inspect it before using.

The melting of the snow and the showers brought by the spring season can increase the chance of experiencing water main breaks and sewer backups. For your safety, refrain from entering flooded areas. Moreover, if you have experienced a flood, never restart your natural gas appliances without having them checked and inspected first. Appliances operated by natural gas like water heaters, furnace and boilers that have been submerged in water, partly submerged in water, come in contact with water or had their electric or gas controls come in contact with water are unsafe to use and must never be used until it was checked by a licensed HVAC technician.

These are the basic things one must remember once spring season is about to take place. Follow the simple safety guidelines above and you can be sure that your summer will not just be fun filled and exciting but safe as well.
