Start Your Own Jewellery Business

Ever trawled jewellery shops looking for something to wear on a Saturday night but can never find anything that suits your style, taste and pocket? Or maybe you already make your own jewellery and are constantly getting envious comments, with friends asking where you got those beautiful earrings from? Well creating your own jewellery may be the answer for you.

The recession means we are all short of money and we are all looking for ways to make extra cash on the side. Your own jewellery business means you can choose how much you work on each project and how much you will sell your items for, meaning you get all the profit. Making your own jewellery is surprisingly cheap, and coupled with the ease of eBay and simple set-up websites; you can ship and send your items quickly and easily.

But first, you only need to have a few good ideas for designing unique and appealing jewellery. To start with you’ll need some money to invest into your new business venture, for mainly purchasing equipment and guides to ensure your products look the part and letting people know that you are around. Whether this means advertising online or distributing fliers around your local area, you need to make sure you are seen and known. You also need to decide what kind of business yours is going to be. Will you specialise in certain items? Will you make jewellery commissioned by customers or will you make beads and jewellery on their own in bulk?

You must be creative and you will need to have a real flair and talent as no one will want to buy misshapen and amateur looking pieces. You must be a quick thinker and be able to create appealing items that will surely sell once they are marketed. It is important to produce jewellery that is unique and different from all of the other jewellery pieces out there, but that is also fashionable, attractive and affordable.

You will also need to consider how people will pay for your products and how much you will charge for each piece, including postage and packaging. Research how much you will need to spend to create each item and work out how much you can sell it for in order to turn a profit, no matter how small initially.

It is best to start small and work your way up. It is best to create between 5-10 unique jewellery pieces and start the marketing process to see how it goes. Then if you don’t manage to sell them you can always use them as gifts for friends and relatives. eBay is a great way to start selling your products to see how well received they will be and the more positive feedback you get, the more confident you will become.

Remember that it will take hard work and dedication, whether you dedicate yourself to it full time or you only spend one day a week working on products. You will need to patient as a successful business won’t happen overnight, but don’t feel too badly. With time, effort and talent you could make a success of a business you may have only started so you would have something nice to wear on a Saturday night.
