The Tatuaje La Verite Vintage 2008 comes from Pete Johnson\’s Tatuaje L\’esprit de la Verite released in July of 2010. This new line offers two kinds of cigars, the La Verite and the L\’esprit de la Verite. The La Verite, which ship in cases of 100 for around $25 a cigar, are broken up and sold as 2 (50) cabs, (4) 25 boxes, or 10 (10) count boxes. The L\’esprit de la Verite is a Robusto size, sold as a less expensive option at $13 a stick. The tobacco comes from Pepin\’s Finca La Estrella (Star Farm) in Estel\’, Nicaragua, all being from the same year, 2008. The wrapper, binder and filler are Nicaraguan Habano Criollo and were rolled in 2009. La Verite translates into \’The Spirit of Truth\’ and it will be released yearly as a single farm vintage.

The concept behind Tatuaje La Verite Vintage 2008 was to create a cigar made entirely from one crop, coming from the same farm from a single year. Unlike conventional cigar making, Pete has taken an unorthodox approach in the construction of his brand. While traditionally tobacco is aged in bales, this time Pete chose to let the tobacco age in the cigars themselves, much like wine ages in the bottle. There will be different blends of the same tobacco sold each year.

Marketed and sold like a vintage wine, this new line is truly unique to anything the cigar industry has seen thus far. In keeping with the spirit of fine wine, Pete sold the La Verite\’s as \’futures\’ a year before its official release. In the wine industry, selling wine after it is bottled but before it is release is referred to as \’futures\’. These prices were about 25% to 20% cheaper than the published $25 a stick.

Pete\’s unique idea in creating this new marketing concept of a single farm vintage has created a huge buzz in the cigar industry and has been well received among avid Tatuaje smokers.

This cigar is beautifully constructed and not overly powerful. The wrapper is velvety, dry and smooth, unlike other Tatuaje\’s, which tend to be oilier. The band is mostly white with burgundy and silver edges with only \’2008\’ stamped on the label. The prelight draw is rich and tangy. Upon lighting, flavors of earth, wood, and cinnamon appear with a slightly dry taste on the back of the palate. The flavors stay consistent through the second third, picking up slightly in strength, but not much.

It appears that the Tatuaje La Verite Vintage 2008 is also quite the departure from other Tatuaje\’s, not only in its inception, but also in flavor. The spice and strength of this cigar is nothing like Pete\’s other blends at all. It is mild in comparison but has plenty of flavor with just the right amount of spice. The smoke ends with more of the character of other Tatuaje\’s with a fuller body, being very rich and oily.

Tatuaje La Verite Vintage 2008 is definitely one for a special occasion when you crave a milder smoke, without a lot of complex flavors that can tend to confuse your palate. Lovely.
