Teeth Whitening – The Facts You Should Know
The process of making your teeth color lighter in color is called teeth whitening. People are always looking for effective methods to whiten their teeth because everyone would love to have a perfectly white-teethed smile. Having a great smile brightens your face and gives you confidence to face other people.
There are different methods you can choose from when trying to make your teeth whiter.
– The use of whitening toothpastes is a popular choice as it does not require additional work. You just simply change your regular toothpaste with it. These toothpastes contain abrasives that can remove some stains at the surface of the teeth. Take note though that they don’t really bleach your teeth, just remove some stains on them.
– In-office tooth whitening with laser and bleach. This is usually a very effective method although it could be quite expensive for some. The teeth are isolated from the gums and the lips. Bleaching gel is then applied to the teeth. This method uses laser in combination with the gel in order to get better results.
– Teeth whitening trays are more tedious and time consuming, but they are quite effective and are done at home. A bleaching agent or a whitening gel is placed on a mouth guard. This is then fitted around your teeth. People need to wear this ranging from just 2 hours up to several hours every day. Some even wear it overnight. I may take 3 days up to 2 weeks before any result is seen. The effect will depend on the strength of the bleaching agent and how long one uses this. Generally the longer you use whitening trays, the whiter your teeth will become.
– Another whitening method that can be used conveniently at home is the whitening strip. The whitening strip is a very thin film that wraps around your teeth both on the top and the bottom. It has a coating of a whitening agent and is left on for about half an hour. It is done twice daily for about 2 weeks.
– The whitening gel on the other hand uses a bleaching gel. A very small brush is used to apply the gel on each tooth individually. This is also used two times a day for one or two weeks.
Yellow or dark teeth are usually associated with poor oral hygiene. But studies have shown that although oral hygiene plays a major role in teeth color, there are other causes for having dark teeth. Some causes of dark teeth that we have no control over are aging and genetics. Teeth naturally grow darker as one grows older and people also have a baseline color of their teeth which is predetermined by their genes.
Other causes are food and drinks such as cola, tea, coffee and even tobacco can stain the teeth and darken their color. Certain dental diseases may also cause the teeth to be discolored. There are also some kinds of drugs that may cause staining of the teeth.
Although a lot of the methods of teeth whitening are available as home treatments, it is best to consult with your dentist first so he or she can explain the proper procedure and risks if any, before going ahead with the method of your choice.
