The Fundamentals of Pennsylvania Personal Auto Insurance
Whether you are new to the state or new to driving in general, it is crucial that you have Pennsylvania personal auto insurance if you want to drive in the Keystone State. While every state in the union requires that you have insurance in order to protect yourself, your passengers, and other drivers on the road, not every state has the same minimum requirements. Having insurance is a good thing because it ensures that you can afford to pay for the cost of repairs or medical attention in the event of an accident. Of course, without insurance these repairs will come out of your own pocket.
Fortunately for drivers in Pennsylvania, the minimum requirements for Pa personal auto insurance are quite basic. There are three basic components to the minimum insurance policy in Pennsylvania: Bodily and Property Damage Liability, and First Party coverage. Bodily Injury Liability ensures that you can cover the cost of medical bills for emergency services, hospitalization and other procedures that may incur from an accident as applied to you, passengers, or other people. Property Damage Liability ensures that you can repair damages to physical property like the other vehicle or private buildings. First Party coverage just ensures that you have enough insurance for yourself, just in case the other drive cannot pay for you.
There are many other things that you can add to your Pa personal auto insurance if you so choose. Obviously, your minimum requirements can always be increased. If you have a family or a particularly expensive vehicle, this might be a good idea. You can also add Personal Injury Protection, which, is one of the first supplemental features that insurance agents will likely recommend. This feature ensures that you get as much medical attention as you need if you are injured in an accident.
In case you do not know how insurance works, your Pennsylvania personal auto insurance is very important because Pennsylvania is a Tort state, not a “no-fault” one. This means that in the event of an accident, at least one person will be found responsible for the “cause” of the accident. This does not always result in litigation as being responsible for an accident does not necessarily mean that you are guilty of a crime. However, if you do not have insurance and are found responsible, you will probably find yourself in court and you could lose your license and even your car.
It is important, then, to find the right Pennsylvania personal auto insurance for you. Obviously, you can plug your information into a search engine and find a company that can offer you a policy. If price and customer service do not matter, then this is probably the easiest thing to do. However, it doesn’t take too much extra work to talk to an insurance agent and find a company that can help design a policy that will work better for you. It’s not just about the services you need, though; you don’t want to pay for services that you don’t need.
