The Many Roles of the Successful Restaurant Owner

A restaurant owner has to wear many masks. This is because a good restaurant owner must have the ability to become many different people and assume many different roles. In order to run a successful restaurant, the owner/operator must know how to slip in and out of these roles at will. He or she must be able to walk a mile in the shoes of every person in his or her employ-from the restaurant\’s standpoint. Some of these roles include the following titles:

– Administrator
– Manager
– Employee
– Customer.

Administrator

A restaurant owner must always have a bit of the administrator in him or her. The administrator must make hard, sometimes cold decisions based on what is best for the restaurant. It is, after all, the business that must succeed in order for everyone involved to meet their goals, collect their pay, and move forward. Sometimes, these decisions will affect the employee\’s hours, discipline, or corrective training for the sake of the restaurant, or even the hiring and firing of personnel regardless of personal feeling. That is the nature of business, including a restaurant.

Manager

The owner will obviously have to take the role as manager, deciding what duties are most important and to whom they should be assigned. The manager is also the one responsible for the restaurant inventory. This is a vital function that directly affects the bottom line on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. If it is on the menu, it needs to be in the inventory, fresh, and not in a capacity of over abundance. The manager deals with the different personalities in the restaurant\’s employ and must understand how to relate to each one individually in order to help them function as a team.

Employee

As the owner of a restaurant, he or she must know how to perform every job. A restaurant owner will have filled every position and is constantly looking for ways to make everyone\’s job easier while making it more productive. To do this, they must also understand each employee. The owner leads by example. Knowing every job means that they are not asking an employee to do something that the owner has not already done before.

Customer

The most important role a restaurant owner will play is that of the customer. To understand what it is the customer wants and expects from a restaurant and its employees is to understand what it takes to run a successful restaurant. Being able to stand in the customer\’s shoes is as important to the employees as it is to the restaurant in that the owner may now teach his or her employees exactly what they need to do to succeed in their roles.

The Big Picture

It is the ability to wear these masks and function in each of these roles that makes for a successful restaurant owner. It allows him or her to lead employees in their individual roles as a member of a team, a contradiction that must be understood in order for it to work. It takes a successful team to make a successful restaurant work. If your dream is to become the owner of your own restaurant, try to understand the role of every piece of your restaurants employment puzzle. If you can do this, you will be able to achieve not just pieces of the puzzle, but the entire picture, allowing you to enjoy success and treating your customers to the dining experience of their lives. That is what makes a great restaurant.
