According to a source, this place is a travel story of a priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha originating from East Java who went eastward to spread the teachings of Hinduism. The preacher made this his resting place and soon after came a few fishermen who brought the god to the priest. Then, when the priest died, the community built the shrine on the island by the name Luhur Pura Tanah Lot, which means the land in the Middle Sea.
