Things to Avoid During Marriage

There are many marriage therapists and counselor who specialize in telling you how to make your marriage work. What many specialists do not do is tell you things to avoid if you want your marriage to last. While the most common marriage mistakes might seem like things that are common sense and very easy to avoid, they are still mistakes that happen each day ruining marriages that may have otherwise lasted. A couple who is working towards a happy, lasting, marriage should try their best avoid common relationship mistakes.

Not Listening
During an argument the last thing anyone wants to do is listen to their spouse hurl insults and criticisms. No one likes hearing negative things about themselves, but shutting out your spouses words can make a bad situation worst. Try to listen to what your spouse is saying. Chances are, you might even discover the root of their anger which will give you an opportunity to bring the argument to a relatively peaceful conclusion. The next time you and your spouse argue, listen to what they are saying instead of just waiting for your turn to speak.

Ignoring Your Spouse
In some situations the best thing that you can do is to walk away from an argument or a fight that is waiting to happen. If you know that your spouse is angry or frustrated because of a situation that has nothing to do with your marriage, it is usually better to avoid an argument by leaving the room or the house. However, it is important to only stay away until your spouse calms down. Do not attempt to punish your spouse by ignoring them or members of the family. No matter what your reasoning is, ignoring your spouse and your family will only make a bad situation much worse. Ignoring your spouse only makes them believe that you do not care about them.

Dating Someone Else
Not cheating on your spouse should seem like a piece of advice that is really common sense, unfortunately many people only consider it cheating if you are actually having sex with another person. It is important to remember that if you start socializing with a person that you are or could be sexually attracted to, you are putting your relationship in jeopardy. By dating another person you are sending your a spouse the message that they are no longer enough for you and that you need to seek the company of someone else because your marriage is not keeping you satisfied.

Making a marriage work is rarely easy, even when few outside problems exist. Learning to live with another person and give their needs and wants as much attention as you give your own desires is difficult. When a marriage becomes hard it is important to remember that you married your spouse because you love them. Keeping in mind how much you care about your spouse will help you avoid hurting them by making a bad decision in a moment of frustration.
