Use Your Hormones To Achieve Goals

When a person is successful, his or her brain secretes hormones that make him or her feel happy. When people achieve goals, they are rewarded by their brains. This is the automatic reward mechanism of our body. From fish to birds, monkeys to elephants every high functioning creature in the world have this rewarding mechanism in their brains. In the wild, from migration to reproduction behaviors, everything is regulated with this mechanism. We may have fallen far from the nature and our intelligence may have defeated our primal instincts. However as long as our hearts beat, this rewarding mechanism keeps working. Even when we feel unsuccessful, it rewards us for our small victories. These small victories are the triggers of this mechanism and they can be good waypoints to take us to our goals.

We must first find our triggers to define our goals. One way to do that is retrospective. For this we must determine a time period in our near past, like a year or six months. Now we must concentrate and remember the moments we felt happy every month. Even if you can only remember very few happy moments they are very important for you to plan your future. You must take notes about your reasons of happiness, the conditions in which you felt this way and so on. In retrospective self analysis getting the help of a close friend might make things easier. However you must keep in mind that some of the things you will remember will be very personal and you may not want anyone to learn about them.

Once you understand your triggers you can extend their meanings. By this what we mean is, for example if the praise of the spouse was a trigger, you can extend this by classifying as the praise of the people you love. This is a good way to determine your goals. If you determine your goals according to triggers of your natural reward mechanism, achieving goals would become easier for you and you will be better motivated to achieve them. After you start to plan your future goals consciously you can also take notes about your happy moments, right after you experience them. This is the prospective method of determining your goals. You can check your notes and compare your new experiences with the old ones. You will see in astonishment that some of your new found triggers are in fact in the extension of your old triggers.

Our body and mind works in harmony with our feelings. When we try to achieve goals, we are in fact trying to experience the feeling of achievement, the happiness of success and the joy of accomplishment. We need these feelings like water and food. Therefore to become healthy and happy individuals we must satisfy our rewarding mechanism along with other needs of our body and soul. Once our triggers are determined all we have to do is follow the path those triggers open and follow them with dedication, devotion and determination.
