The best autoblogging software may be the simplest. That may strike some as counter-intuitive: don\’t we want all sorts of bells and whistles on every piece of marketing software we buy?

I disagree. When it comes to autoblogging, all the extras we like to get hold of may be destructive to good marketing. Here\’s why:

1. How do autoblog plugins work?

An autoblog plugin is actually a pretty straightforward piece of kit. It is designed to do one main task: to run a cron job wherein it checks to see if an rss feed of your choosing has been updated.

If it has been, you\’ve got fresh content for your blog. Your plugin may auto post it to you blog, or queue it up for you to review manually.

Either way, that\’s what this type of software is all about. And that\’s all you\’ll really ever need.

2. When bad things happen to good software…

The worst thing to happen to autoblogging, and to content marketing in general, is spinning.

Re-writing content is as old as writing itself. Journalists have been re-writing content for decades in order to meet deadlines, and will use wire services– the journalistic equivalent of plr– for their source.

But automated spinning is a different kettle of fish. It tends to produce poor quality stuff that no one would want to read, and tends to pollute the content networks i general.

Spinning has featured has featured in a big way in recent autoblog packages. There are even packages that will auto spin in different languages!

3. And the result has been…

The result has been huge numbers of autoblogs with very poor quality writing. The reality is that these blogs are not meant to be read, but are mainly platforms for adsense and affiliate offers.

In other words, they are all about advertising.

I am not opposed to advertising! Advertising plays a critical part in our economy, and is the main medium for spreading the word about new products. Ultimately, it is the consumer, not the advertiser, who determines the success or otherwise of every new thing on the market.

But would you buy a magazine that carried only advertising, interleaved with badly written, re-written articles that came from elsewhere? Of course you wouldn\’t!

4. There is a better way

the better way to use your autoblogging plugin is as an adjunct to your other marketing efforts.

You cannot build a house with only a hammer. You need a variety of tools to build your house, and you need to be skilled in the use of all of them.

In the same way, your marketing efforts should not rely on only one tool, or one method. At their best autoblogging software a great way to bring in fresh, on target content to your blog when you have already posted your own original material.

In other words, your blog ideally has a mix of materials: stuff you have written, stuff you have auto posted from elsewhere, and material that perhaps you have had guest written.

This mix will be interesting to your readers, and lets them know that you care about them, and are committed to bringing them a variety of good content from a variety of sources.

The best autoblog software will be of little use to you unless you know the right way to use it. Remember: it\’s just a tool, not the foundation of your business.
